Review and Highlights of Domaine de Manville

Overview

Domaine de Manville is tucked within Les Alpilles (or “little Alps”) in southwest Provence, a swath of protected natural parkland that’s dotted with sun-baked limestone ridges, gnarled olive trees and thickets of pine. The vine-draped main house at the heart of the grounds originally anchored an early 20th-century farm; several generations later, local couple Edith and Patrick Saut, who have deep ties to the area, saw its potential as a luxe oasis within this rugged region. They transformed the main house and outbuildings into a stylish resort that honors its heritage, christening it Domaine de Manville in tribute to original owner Louis-Alexandre Blanc de Manville.

Although its 5-star elegance is unmistakable, the estate warmly welcomes families, and it’s as appropriate for a getaway with young kids as it is for a romantic retreat or a couples’ escape. It retains a strong sense of history yet never comes across as staid or formal — all ages feel equally comfortable and catered to.

Unlike many Provençal resorts that close for the winter, Domaine de Manville remains open year-round. There’s no bad time to visit, but I think early autumn is the finest season to be in this part of France, as the grapevines turn rusty and the plane trees blaze with golden foliage. Our early October stay brought warm sunny days with evenings crisp enough for a sweater — perfect weather for lingering outdoors in the large outdoor courtyard that acts as the social heart of the resort. Guests gravitate here from morning to night, settling into the cushioned lounge chairs with a book or gathering around the café tables with a glass of local rosé in hand.

No matter when you visit, what really elevates the onsite experience is the people. Hospitality is second nature at Domaine de Manville — from the bell and concierge desks to the breakfast and bar staff, everyone we encountered was kind and eager to help. Service feels genuine and personal, with staff members taking pains to remember drink preferences or the way you take your morning coffee, offer insider tips and suggestions, and ensure every detail of your stay runs seamlessly. This level of care and attention is woven into the property’s DNA, and it’s another reason I found it exceptionally hard to leave.

Accommodations

With 30 rooms plus nine individual villas, Domaine de Manville feels intimate even at peak capacity. Our ground-floor Terrace Suite was expansive yet cozy, with a full sitting area and king bedroom linked by a small corridor, bookended by glass window walls that brought to life the sassy palette of charcoal, black and dusty rose. In between lay an airy bathroom with a spacious rain shower, a freestanding footed tub and two separate WCs. My favorite feature was the rear patio overlooking the courtyard, draped with a canopy of vines that allowed light to filter through yet offered just the right amount of shade and privacy.

Other accommodations range from smaller Classic Rooms and Deluxe Rooms (the latter equipped with balconies) to Manville Suites, which have skylights and private loggias, and the Prestige Suite, which evokes the air of a private apartment and includes its own rooftop deck. There’s also a Duplex Family Suite with two bedrooms, one downstairs and one in an upper loft, that’s well suited for a family of four.

The villas are generously sized and a bit more contemporary in style. Depending on the category, each has three or four bedrooms plus multiple bathrooms, an outdoor terrace, a fireplace, a dining room and a full kitchen. Although they’re centrally located on the property, you have a welcome impression of seclusion once you step inside, and there is a dedicated outdoor pool for villa guests as well.

Activities and Amenities

One of the things that sets Domaine de Manville apart for families is the variety of onsite activities that truly engage children rather than just keeping them occupied. Housed in a pair of cute structures that resemble wagon cars, the kids’ club is available in summer, on weekends and during French school holidays for ages 3-12. In addition to unstructured playtime outdoors, the daily-changing schedule might include painting, crafts, games, movies or nature hunts. Kids and farm animals go hand in hand, and they’ll love meeting the resident donkeys and pony, perhaps offering them a treat or two … the sweetest!

The large, heated outdoor pool within the courtyard is great for families — you’ll feel completely at ease splashing with the kids. But parents who want a tranquil respite or a full workout can head for the spa, which holds an indoor pool in addition to a whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room and fitness equipment. The menu of treatments ranges from massages and facials to skin and body therapies — though I didn’t make time for a session, the hourlong outdoor massage amid the pine trees sounded divine. And I love that they offer treatments just for the unique needs of teenage skin as well.

Beyond the pools and spa, there are plenty of options to stay busy. Borrow electric bikes to explore the property’s private trails and venture into the surrounding Alpilles countryside, or hike through the hills on your own or with a guide. On chilly or rainy days, take a seat in the private cinema for a film screening; if it’s nice out, try your hand at a game of pétanque (while you sip pastis, of course). Part of Domaine de Manville’s 100 acres are devoted to a permaculture garden, where seasonal fruits and vegetables are cultivated to supply the restaurant kitchens, and you can arrange a visit with a horticulturist to learn more about the process. The concierge can also book cooking classes, excursions like horseback riding, wine tastings in the estate’s cellar or private wellness sessions. There’s never an idle moment, unless you want it that way.

Golf is among Domaine de Manville’s main draws — its celebrated 18-hole course sits in the shadow of Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the area’s prettiest and most dramatic hilltop villages. If you want to fine-tune your putts and chip shots, the onsite Manville Golf Academy provides individual coaching for both adults and kids. The golf club also hosts various tournaments throughout the year; the highlight is the Manville Legends Cup, an annual October event in which professional soccer and rugby players face off against each other on the links.

At the edge of the first hole you’ll find La Cabane, a small cabin that invites relaxing over a beverage and a casual bite. The fare includes simple sandwiches, omelets, burgers and salads plus beer, wine, sodas, juices and hot drinks such as cocoa and cappuccino, accompanied by a perfect view of the ruined medieval castle perched atop Les Baux’s sheer cliffs.

Dining

Domaine de Manville offers several dining venues in addition to La Cabane, each with its own appeal. The Michelin-starred signature restaurant, L’Aupiho, is a serene cocoon of creamy hues and moody lighting, with an inventive, well-curated menu that features dishes such as pigeon with green curry, bluefin tuna with fresh basil and lentil cream, and wine-poached figs with blackcurrants and mascarpone. The wine list is equally stellar; vineyards fan out through the surrounding countryside, and you’ll find a wealth of choice bottles from the organic Les Baux-de-Provence appellation.

At the less formal Bistrot, you can feast on Provençal classics like pissaladière (flatbread with onions and anchovies), steak tartare with frites, and lamb accompanied by mushrooms and potato gratin. And breakfast, served in a soaring glass conservatory known as Le Jardin d’Hiver, starts the day on a lovely note with a lavish buffet supplemented by a small selection of egg dishes cooked to order. I recommend dolloping your baguette with a little of the honey that’s produced in the onsite beehives — it’s delicious.

At apéro time, we especially loved lounging on the cushioned sofas outside the bar, fortified by nibbles like olives, breads and a beautifully presented cheese plate. Had the temptation of dinner not lured us away, we’d probably have spent all evening there sipping one of the excellent local wines and watching the stars flicker into brilliance above the courtyard.

Local Area

Among the highlights of Les Alpilles is Carrières des Lumières, an old limestone quarry-turned-digital artscape where famous paintings are animated and projected in shifting scenes along the stone surfaces, immersing visitors in color, light and sound from every angle. It’s a treat for all ages and not to be missed. The site is only 10 minutes or so from Domaine de Manville, and the concierge desk typically keeps tickets on hand; the staff will also shuttle you there and back, a nice perk as parking can fill up in a blink. Programming changes with the seasons — the featured artists during our stay were Monet and Rousseau, as well as a kid-friendly Le Petit Prince exhibit.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, one of the most charming towns in the region, is also an easy drive from Domaine de Manville and an essential stop. This is Van Gogh country, and the self-guided Van Gogh Trail spans a mile-long path through town, with placards along the way highlighting spots central to the artist’s life and depicted in his paintings. Be sure to visit the Monastery of Saint-Paul de Masole, where he spent a year recovering from the mental health crisis that led him to sever his ear, and where he created masterpieces like Irises and The Starry Night. There are no original works on display, but you can see a reconstruction of his bedroom and other spaces that lend a sense of how patients at the monastery lived in those days.

Getting There and Around

The closest major airport to Domaine de Manville is Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), about an hour’s drive away. You can also opt for a direct TGV train from Paris to Arles or Avignon, which takes between 2 1/2 and 4 hours; the resort sits roughly halfway between the two. Although Domaine de Manville offers shuttle service to Les Baux and the nearby village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, you’ll want a car for exploring farther afield — it takes a little time to get used to driving on the narrow back roads, but navigating the region is easy.

The biggest markets in Europe, such as Vienna, Nuremberg, Cologne and Strasbourg, sit directly on Europe’s waterways. Ships holding less than 200 people moor close to city centers, so you step off the gangway and into the celebration instead of fighting through holiday-season traffic or train schedules. You can visit several markets in a single cruise, often across multiple countries, with mulled-wine tastings and carol singalongs waiting when you return on board.

Essential Tips for a Christmas Market River Cruise

When to Go

Sailings start in late November and wrap up by December 23 or 24, when most markets close for the holiday itself. (The point of markets is to find presents for loved ones, so they do not generally operate after Christmas.) If you want to visit the wooden-stall scenes while in full swing, aim for the first three weeks of December; later departures lean more toward New Year’s festivities.

Age Requirements

While river cruising has become much more accepting of children in the last decade, most do not welcome children under the age of 4, and the few that do may not have equipment to accommodate little ones, meaning you’ll have to bring your own crib and such. River cruises have expanded their programming to offer more for children; however, this is typically during the summer months, so be sure to bring items to keep kids entertained when you are onboard during a festive sailing.

Classic Rivers for Christmas Markets

The Danube

The Danube is the leader for Christmas markets, linking Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Bavaria. Even short itineraries hit four or five marquee stops. Expect monumental backdrops like St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna and Buda Castle across the river in Budapest, along with baroque town centers and plenty of strudel breaks between stalls.

The Rhine

From Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, the Rhine delivers half-timbered towns and Gothic cathedrals. Cologne’s cathedral market, Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik and Rüdesheim’s candlelit lanes headline the route during the holiday season. You’ll sample both German and French holiday traditions.

The Seine

While it may not have the density of markets found along the Rhine or Danube, the Seine offers illuminated landmarks, boutique-style markets and a festive Parisian atmosphere. Sailings typically start or end in Paris and travel to Rouen and Honfleur, pairing urban lights with medieval charm.

You won’t see every Christmas market on a single cruise, but these cities and towns stand out for their atmosphere, history and experiences. Think of them as the deciding factor when choosing your itinerary.

Basel, Switzerland

At the southern end of many Rhine routes, Basel serves as stylish gateway to the holiday season. Its main markets at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz showcase Swiss chalet stalls brimming with toys, candles and fondue-ready cheese. The towering Christmas tree, designed each year by a Swiss artist, stands before the Basel Minster, where choirs often perform beneath the Gothic arches.

Bratislava, Slovakia

While Bratislava’s Christmas market may be on the small side, it’s one of the most welcoming in Europe. Centered around the Main Square and Hviezdoslavovo Square, it showcases Slovak traditions through wooden toys, embroidered lines and hearty local dishes like lokše (potato pancakes) and mead. It’s also easy to explore with kids — compact, safe and walkable.

Budapest, Hungary

Few cities feel more magical at Christmas than Budapest. Most Danube itineraries start or end here, allowing time to explore two of Europe’s top markets: Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica. Families can also ice skate in City Park, then warm up at the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths before reboarding.

Cologne, Germany

Set beneath the twin Gothic spires of the city’s world-famous cathedral, Cologne’s Cathedral Market shimmers with red canopies and more than 150 chalets selling wooden ornaments, mugs and toys. Six additional markets spread throughout the city, including the Heinzels Winter Fairytale Market in the Old Town, where ice skaters can glide beneath fairy lights.

Nuremberg, Germany

No list of Europe’s Christmas markets is complete without Nuremberg, home to the legendary Christkinglesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous in the world. Dating back to the 1600s, the market fills the city’s Haupmarkt with more than 180 wooden stalls draped in red-and-white cloth and crowned with golden angels. Each year, the market opens with the appearance of the Chriskind, a costumed angel who reads a traditional prologue from the church balcony. A dedicated Children’s Market features a carousel, Ferris wheel and toy workshops.

Paris

While the Danube and Rhine host the most traditional Christmas routes, Paris adds its own sparkle to the season with Christmas stalls set up along the Champs-Élysées. Cruises begin or end here, where the Tuileries Garden Market offers ice skating, Ferris wheel rides and French specialties like crêpes.

Passau, Germany

Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, and its baroque skyline is dominated by the twin spires of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Here, the city’s market unfolds in the square at the cathedral’s steps, where white canopies glow against the pink and gold façade of the Old Town. Be sure to step inside the church for an organ concert as it houses one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

Regensburg, Germany

One of Bavaria’s most atmospheric quarters, Regensburg’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobblestone lanes and medieval towers. During the holidays, the entire Old Town glows with lights, but the crown jewel is the Thurn und Taxis Palace Christmas Market, held within the courtyard of the princely palace. Choirs perform by open fires and the scent of roasted nuts fills the air.

Rüdesheim, Germany

Tucked between the vineyards and riverbanks, Rüdesheim is a cozy German town with a Christmas Market of the Nations, drawing artisans from around the world. The market fills the cobbled lanes of Drosselgasse with a mix of international crafts, music and street food. Visitors can try Swiss raclette, Finnish salmon or local Riesling-spiked glühwein.

Strasbourg, France

Known as the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg hosts one of Europe’s oldest and grandest markets, dating back to 1570. Nearly 300 chalets line the Grand-Île, surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral with twinkling lights and Alsatian specialties like bredele cookies. The main Chriskindelsmärik at Place Broglie buzzes with music and, as the city straddles the border of France and Germany, offers the best of both traditions in one place.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s main Christkindlmarkt fills Rathauplatz with more than 150 stalls stretching across City Hall Park, selling ornaments, pastries and hot drinks, and an ice trail looping in between. Meanwhile, smaller markets like those at Schönbrunn Palace and Spittelberg provide a quieter atmosphere with less crowds that are still just as magical. When visiting, don’t miss a stop in one of the city’s traditional cafes for a slice of Sachertorte.

Our Top 10 Mother-Son Vacation Ideas

Dude Ranch

On a ranch vacation, the vast menu of activities means that moms and sons can strike the perfect balance of alone time and together time. CB! founder Amie O’Shaughnessy loved experiencing Colorado Trails Ranch (pictured above) with her son, from the simple but comfortable accommodations to the personalized riding setup. As with most dude ranches, there are no TVs and no Wifi in the guest cabins, so everyone gets a digital detox. Plus, the inherent structure built into a ranch vacation, and the fact that there’s no car required, allows moms to relax and engage without being preoccupied by driving and directions.

Venice

Venice seems tailor-made for a mother-son visit: It feels adventurous, yet it’s safe and you can walk anywhere day or night. And there are so many unique neighborhoods within the city to explore. Getting lost amid the labyrinthine streets and waterways is half the fun, so pocket the map and just wander a while, soaking up the dreamlike, slightly eerie atmosphere. When you’ve gotten oriented again, sample some of the only-in-Venice activities that make for an unforgettable trip. Get creative with a mask-making workshop; learn to row like a gondolier; take a walking tour through the convoluted history of the Doges’ Palace; stroll through St. Mark’s Square late in the evening, after the day-trippers have gone and live orchestra music drifts through the air. Pure magic!

New Zealand

If your guy has serious New Zealand envy after watching the Lord of the Rings movies, he’ll never forget seeing where they were filmed — the rich and rugged scenery is indeed straight out of a fantasy. New Zealanders have capitalized on the Tolkien craze and guided tours of “Middle Earth” pop up everywhere, but it’s not difficult to put together a self-drive pilgrimage on either the North or South Island (to do both requires at least two weeks). Gems include the movie-set village of Hobbiton; Kaitoke Regional Park, aka Rivendell; and the town of Twizel, from which you can tour the site that became home to the iconic Pelennor Fields battle scene. The good news is that there’s much more to both islands than LOTR — and a New Zealand vacation is easier than it may seem. Just prepare for driving on the left side of the road if you’re not used to that at home.

Iceland

Want to wow even the most jaded tween or teen? Take him to Iceland. With its wonderfully weird landscape and endless supply of thrills — think driving on glaciers and scuba diving between tectonic plates — this otherworldly island satisfies an older kid’s craving for new and offbeat experiences. He may be long past the cute and cuddly animals phase, but he’ll be entranced by puffins, minke whales and sturdy Icelandic horses. Plus, there’s something about this remote country that inspires boys to let their silly side out. On Amie’s mother-son Iceland vacation, one of the highlights was an off-road buggy ride through bumpy terrain and muddy rivers … giggles galore!

Surf Camp, Costa Rica

Learning an adventure sport, like surfing, together builds trust and brings moms and sons closer in a way that few other experiences can match. Immersive surf-instruction camps are plentiful throughout Central America, but the trick is to choose one geared toward families. Our top pick: Peaks n’ Swells on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, which offers weeklong sessions just for parents and kids — there’s a maximum of three families at a time to ensure personal attention and low student-instructor ratios during each day’s lesson. When it’s time to take a break from the waves, relax with a yoga class while the boy in your life joins in a pickup soccer game or hangs out by the pool with other kids. As a bonus, all-inclusive pricing means the logistics couldn’t be simpler, and you won’t be doing mental math every time your ravenous son makes another trip to the buffet.

Tokyo

If you and your son are itching to tackle Asia, Japan is a terrific entry point: It’s distinctly, enticingly different yet offers the familiar conveniences kids are used to. Our favorite Japan itinerary with kids pairs a few days in Tokyo with a short stay in Kyoto for a taste of both ancient and modern. Gamers and gadget lovers will be especially mad for Tokyo’s Akihabara electronics district, 24-hour arcades, high-tech museums, driverless bullet trains and, of course, conveyor-belt sushi shops. But don’t get so caught up in the digital world that you miss out on other must-dos, like ascending Tokyo Tower, exploring the Senso-ji Temple, strolling the Ueno Zoo or sampling sea creatures at the Tsukiji Fish Market.

Billund, Denmark

Denmark may be famous for Viking history and midcentury design, but kids know it for one big reason: Legos! Capture a brick-builder’s heart with a visit to Billund, home of Lego headquarters, where a three-day Lego Inside Tour is offered once a month from March through December (these sell out in a blink, so sign up early). Your son can meet and build alongside Lego designers, tour the factory, pick up souvenirs at the staff shop, and get a close-up look at rare building kits you won’t find anywhere else in the word. As a bonus, the original Legoland amusement park is nearby, with enough rides and hands-on activities to keep little guys busy for a whole day. And when it’s time to settle in for the night, get cozy in Legoland Holiday Village, which offers life-size replicas of cottages and cabins from popular Lego series like Ninjago. Be sure to dedicate at least two or three days at the start or end of the trip to exploring Copenhagen.

New York City

New York’s high-octane energy is perfect for active boys, and the bottomless layers of history, culture, iconic sights and just plain fun make it effortless to design a trip around kids’ personal interests. My son and I spent a week in the city when he was 10 and it was one of the best vacations we’ve ever taken together. We admired the views from the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock; craned our necks skyward at the base of Lady Liberty; conquered the Met and the Museum of Natural History; ate pizza in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge; strolled amid vintage planes on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid — and that’s just for starters. From Broadway to baseball to biking along the river, both moms and boys will have a blast discovering their own slice of Big Apple bliss.

Norway

Kind and helpful locals, widely spoken English, jaw-dropping scenery, easy driving and safety … what’s not to love about Norway? The staff likes to refer to Cataloochee’s vibe as “pinky-up rustic,” and I can’t think of a better phrase to capture it. You’ll find all the horseback riding, cattle herding and outdoor pursuits you’d expect from a working ranch, paired with top-drawer accommodations and cuisine that are as far away from roughing it as you can get.

Review and Highlights of Cataloochee Ranch

The Setting

Founded in the 1930s, Cataloochee has always been about embracing and honoring the surrounding landscape rather than the other way around. Its 800-plus acres of rolling pastureland and forest, virtually all pristine, sit on the doorstep of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s also next door to the Cataloochee Ski Area, a big draw to this corner of the mountains in wintertime (and, as it happens, the first place I ever skied, back when I was a tween growing up just a few hours south in Georgia).

Cataloochee is the sister property of The Swag, a refined yet relaxed mountain retreat that sits just a few ridges away; you can actually ride between them on horseback if you like. Whether you’re coming with kids, on a couples’ retreat or — as I did — for a girlfriends’ getaway, it’s a welcome invitation to unplug and settle into the rhythm of ranch life.

Accommodations

Twelve freestanding cabins are scattered around the heart of the property; just up the hill, a lodge known as Silverbell houses half a dozen suites. Our one-bedroom cabin, called Palmer, was airy and open, with a small wet bar and mini fridge plus a wraparound porch on which we could relax and enjoy views of the wooded scenery and the onsite pond. The decor pays tribute to classic lodge style; ranch motifs keep company with whitewashed timbers, beaded board, industrial accents and cheeky touches like a grid of brightly painted deer skulls mounted on the wall.

In addition to a king bedroom and ensuite bath, Palmer has a spacious living area with a queen sleeper sofa, which the staff will make up while you’re out for the evening. All cabins include working fireplaces, and ours was a welcome spot to nestle down with a cozy blanket at the end of the day (even in summer, the mountain evenings can get crisp).

TIP: For travelers with limited mobility, Palmer is the one cabin that’s fully accessible. There’s also an accessible lodge room, dubbed Moody, that can be connected with the Gooseberry room next door to sleep up to six people, ideal for multigenerational families.

Onsite Activities

Horseback riding is among the main draws at Cataloochee Ranch, with ample opportunities for all experience levels (minimum age 8) ranging from hourlong sessions to half-day ridgetop trail excursions in group or private form. Some 15 steeds — quarter horses, Tennessee walking horses and others — call the barn home, and equestrian manager Tracy Reed is happy to introduce guests to her charges. One of the standout experiences is the guided ride to The Swag for the weekly gourmet lunch picnic held at Gooseberry Knob, a perfect pairing of chef-driven menus and mountainous vistas.

Younger kids can join in with lead-line rides, where an expert guide holds the reins, or get their horse fix via “Painting with the Ponies.” They’ll squirt and dab paint on a canvas, then cover it with plastic wrap, top it with treats and let the horse lick at them to swirl the paint beneath … every bit as cute as it sounds.

For those who prefer hiking boots to cowboy boots, the ranch is laced with trails at varying levels of intensity. A treetop challenge course (minimum age 8) offers a network of tightropes plus three ziplines. Other diversions include archery, axe throwing, birdwatching and air rifles; you can also try your hand at fly-fishing nearby or head for the stocked pond onsite with fishing gear borrowed from the Mercantile, Cataloochee’s shop and canteen. A new swimming pool is in the works and should open in time for warm weather next year.

I strongly recommend booking a UTV tour of the property, too — it’s a great way to get the lay of the land and visit some of the farthest reaches of Cataloochee’s acreage. We had a blast zipping through the woods and along the fields with our guide, Morgan, in a sturdy, semi-enclosed vehicle, stopping now and then to stretch our legs amid the trails, fields and waterfall pools. The tour’s high point, literally and figuratively, is Hemphill Bald, from which you’ll have an unbelievable panorama over the Blue Ridge and the ranch buildings far below. It’s preternaturally peaceful as you watch the clouds drift in and out, and there’s even an opening in the fence that lets you step right into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hemphill Bald is also reachable on foot via a steep, 3.5-mile out-and-back trail.

Another highlight you won’t want to miss: the complimentary evening cattle feeding. Trace Guyer, the ranch’s young and enthusiastic director of cattle operations, drives guests out to the pasture to meet the herd, and you’ll hear about how the ranch’s cattle program works as you hold out fistfuls of a grain mixture for the cows to munch. They’re surprisingly gentle and very eager for their snack — giggles galore for kids as the soft muzzles tickle their palms. Tip: You’ll be walking through tall grass, so wear clothes that can get dusty, then go back and change for dinner.

If you need a rest from outdoor adventures or an activity for a rainy day, the ranch offers a menu of creative workshops like watercolor painting, botanical monoprinting and basic pottery (they host a kids-only version called Clay Camp several times a week). We signed up for a leather stamping lesson and spent a fun couple of hours with mallets and embossing tools in hand, crafting a set of personalized coasters to take home. Or practice your putts at the “golf saloon,” a simulator that allows you to play virtual holes on courses around the world and includes a junior mode for younger golfers. In the mood for a little pampering? Head to The Still, the on-property spa at The Swag, for a delightful massage or facial.

Dining

With so much happening on-property, you can’t help but work up an appetite. All meals are served in Switchback, a gorgeous, high-ceilinged lodge that was once the main ranch building. Breakfast, included with your stay, starts the day on a delicious note with crowd pleasers like chicken and waffles or fluffy biscuits smothered in sausage gravy. Lunchtime brings burgers, salads, bowls and wood-fired pizzas, while weekends swap lunch for a deluxe brunch that draws locals as well as ranch guests.

The dinner menu marries Southern flavors with global ingredients, showcasing the kitchen’s creative range yet preserving a sense of place. While certain standbys remain on the menu, others change weekly according to the time of year — you might find smoked trout dip with housemade crackers, duck with Japanese hakurei turnips and salsify, or roasted beets with yogurt, mint and cherry peppers. For dessert, our favorite was the make-your-own gelato sandwich — you can choose from either chocolate chip cookies or a seasonal version, and decide on the gelato flavor you want tucked between them as well.

We were lucky enough to be at the ranch for the Wednesday night cookout, the liveliest meal of the week (offered from spring through late fall). The massive dining room doors that lead to the patio are thrown wide, and the scent of smoke from the wood-fired forge oven will kindle your appetite as you mingle with other guests and enjoy the live music in the background. The culinary team sets up a buffet laden with brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken and trout, accompanied by a rainbow of hearty sides like mac and cheese, various salads, cornbread, barbecue beans and fresh vegetables. And if you have a sweet tooth, you’re in the right place … I counted at least five different treats, including a pineapple upside down cake rich with caramelly goodness.

Along with The Swag, Cataloochee Ranch was recently named a DarkSky Approved Lodging by DarkSky International — the first such achievement on the East Coast — and programming is in the works to make the most of the incredible stargazing in the area. In the meantime, it’s a joy simply to sit outdoors and look upward as twilight fades away. After a day of mountain air and adventure, there’s no better finale than watching the stars emerge, one by twinkling one, over the silhouetted peaks in the distance.

Papakōlea Beach, Hawaii

Papakōlea Beach on the southern shores of the Big Island of Hawaii is one of just a handful around the world where the sand leading to the water isn’t black, beige, white, gray or any other typical hue … it’s green. The beach gets its unusual color thanks to the olivine crystals that come from the nearby volcanic activity, and the pure novelty puts it up there with the best beach vacations for teens. Getting to Papakōlea Beach takes a little effort — it requires a 2.5-mile hike to reach — but the payoff is worth it. While it’s not always advisable to swim here due to the intense waves, it’s a great place to go shelling and admire this geological phenomenon for yourself.

Elafonissi Beach, Crete

If green beaches aren’t your teen’s thing, maybe pink would suit them better. While pastel-colored sand isn’t rare, one of the most beautiful pink beaches you’ll ever visit is Elafonissi Beach along the southwestern shore of Crete. The warm water is perfect for leisurely swims, and sunbeds and umbrellas are available to rent on the main beach; as food options here are limited, it’s also ideal for packing a picnic. Getting here from home bases near the popular towns of Chania and Heraklion takes some time, so make sure you get an early start or plan an evening visit so you can explore and enjoy Elafonissi without peak crowds.

Eagle Beach, Aruba

If your family’s idea of a perfect beach day involves a long list of activities on the sand and at sea, Eagle Beach in Aruba delivers. Laid-back but just lively enough to keep teens happy, it’s an incredible spot for heading into the open waters on jet skis, taking ATV rides around the area, kayaking through the waves or paddleboarding in the shallows. Curious teens will be intrigued by the crooked Divi-Divi (Fofoti) trees that lean toward the sea along the shoreline — a fun place to seek shade when the sun is high overhead. This is also a prime spot for turtle nesting, and in season (March to September), you might be lucky enough to witness a hatching event.

Whitehaven Beach, Australia

Part of Whitsunday Islands National Park in Queensland, Australia, Whitehaven Beach is only reachable by boat, seaplane or helicopter, and its remoteness and sparse facilities make it a better fit with older kids than little ones. As the name suggests, it’s home to pale, powdery sand that remains cool underfoot even on the hottest days; at nearby Hill Inlet, the sand swirls with turquoise water for an absolutely jawdropping effect (hike to the lookout at Tongue Bay to get a view from overhead). Snorkeling and diving are popular at Whitehaven too, as it’s right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and sea creatures abound in the shallows.

Fortunately, Belgium is also very easy to visit with kids in tow. Its cities are small enough to feel manageable and are conveniently accessible from one another by train. The relatively flat topography cries out for leisurely bike ride exploration. And the compact size means families can cover a lot of ground around the country in just a few days, without changing accommodations every night.

Where to Go in Belgium with Kids

The first step in any trip planning process is deciding where to go and how long to stay. Most visitors to Belgium only have a few days, so they pick three to four towns or cities to focus on. We’ve highlighted some of our favorites below. We advise choosing one location as a home base; visit the rest as day trips by train.

With more time, it’s easy to tack on a few days along the coast (yes, Belgium has beaches!) or in the countryside. Consider booking a tour of World War I and II battlefields. Belgium can also easily be incorporated into a grander European experience, with direct train routes from London, Paris, Amsterdam and other cities that take less than 2 hours.

Brussels

Brussels’ train connections to other locations within the country and beyond make it a convenient launch point for exploring the rest of Belgium. Plus, its status as the headquarters of the European Union gives it a distinct international flair.

The Grand Place, one of Europe’s most iconic city squares, is the center of activity in Brussels. Events are held here throughout the year, but the “Flower Carpet” installation that happens every other summer is worth planning a visit around. The entire square is covered in a quilt of 500,000 flower blossoms in beautiful shapes and patterns. From the Grand Place, it’s an easy walk to Manneken-Pis, the humorous statue of a boy relieving himself. Not exactly highbrow culture, but certain to give the whole family a chuckle.

Be sure to introduce the comic book character Tintin to your children before a visit to Brussels. They’ll love finding the Tintin references around the city, including fun murals, and a stop at the Herges Museum will cap off their comic history lesson. If comics aren’t of interest, opt for the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, which gives kids a good base of knowledge about Belgium’s unique chocolate history. Consider it necessary preparation for the inevitable chocolate sampling to come!

Bruges

There’s a saying among Ciao Bambino Travel Advisors that certain locations are touristy for a reason. Bruges very much fits that bill. Yes, masses of tourists descend on this town every day to wander its streets and admire its incredibly well-preserved center. But experiencing Bruges is still so enjoyable that it shouldn’t be missed. My family loved using Bruges as a Belgium home base, because by dinnertime each evening, the day trippers had fled and the streets were so quiet it seemed we had this magical place all to ourselves.

The main appeal of Bruges is simply exploring its medieval roads and alleys, but as all parents know, kids can tire of this quickly. A boat tour is the perfect reprieve and Bruges is even more spectacular by water. All operators follow basically the same route; just pick the vendor with the shortest line. The ride itself is only 30 minutes, so it is enjoyable even with younger children.

There are several parks and playgrounds tucked away a few blocks from the main tourist routes, so have a couple of these on your radar when you need a play break. And don’t miss a visit to Chocolatier Dumon. While there are countless chocolate shops in Bruges, this shop produces the confections in-house, and families love watching the demonstrations here. Given its small size compared to other Belgian cities, Bruges is also a great spot to rent bikes and head out of town for fresh countryside air. The bike rental companies can suggest beautiful routes with easy paths that are safe for families.

Ghent

Some visitors to Belgium decide between Bruges or Ghent for a day trip, but given enough time, visiting both is well worth it, as they have distinctively different vibes. Ghent is more modern and less touristy than Bruges, but still beautiful.

A visit to the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen) is a highlight here. It’s a medieval castle and feels less fussy than some of its European counterparts, so it’s quite easy to do with children of all ages. The view from the rooftop is spectacular, and it’s fun to scout out your route for the rest of the day from this vantage point.

The children’s workshops at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent are some of the best in Europe (as is the art collection overall at this museum). Kids who hate to be cooped up indoors can experience the art of Ghent’s graffiti alley instead. It is right in the center of the city and you can grab a walking map from the Visitor’s Center. Teens will love these Instagram-worthy installations!

Antwerp

Most Belgian towns and cities are bike-friendly, but Antwerp is particularly so with its wide bike lanes. Consider renting bikes here and zipping around, as there is a lot to do and see, especially if you only have a day to spend here.

Antwerp’s zoo is a highlight for children, and it is conveniently located just a quick walk from the train station. But on a beautiful day, head to the left bank of the city via the historic and fascinating Sint Anna Tunnel, which runs under the River Scheide. Emerging from the tunnel, families will find a fun, whimsical playground, and it reflects Antwerp as a port city with its nautical theme and play structures. There’s even a little beach here, fun to visit if the weather is warm.

If your children are fascinated by transportation, a harbor cruise in Antwerp is a must. Different from Bruges’ and Ghent’s smaller canal boat rides, Antwerp cruises pass by large industrial ships and enormous cranes loading and unloading from the busy docks.

Belgium’s family-friendly cities and sites truly delight young visitors, and it is well worth carving out a few days or even an entire week when in Europe in order to experience this fairytale location.

This breathtaking landscape, including quaint villages with bright red houses and grazing sheep dotting the coastal foothills, is generally best to explore via cruise. Below, our introductory guide to some of Norway’s most famous fjords, two of which are UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites, and how to visit them.

Our Guide to Exploring Norway’s Best Fjords

Norway’s coastline, from north to south, boasts more than 1,000 fjords. However, some of the most dramatic of these are concentrated in western Norway, also known as Fjord Norway. And in some cases, it’s the narrow arms or branching inlets of a larger fjord that have gained the greatest popularity for their jaw-dropping scenery (the UNESCO-recognized Nærøyfjord is in fact an arm of the Sognefjord, described below).

Sognefjord

Often called the king of fjords, Sognefjord is the longest in all of Norway, stretching more than 124 miles into the interior of the country. It is also the widest but has several side arms, and measures nearly 4,300 feet at its deepest. It sits just north of Bergen, in the center of western Norway, making it relatively easy to visit as part of a longer cruise or even a day cruise. My daughter and I did just that last summer, taking a train from beautiful Bergen to the town of Voss, then transferring to a bus from Voss to Gudvangen, where we embarked on an electric boat cruise and took in the stunning Nærøyfjord for two hours before disembarking in the cute village of Flåm.

From Flåm, we took a train to Oslo with one transfer in between. While it sounds like numerous changes, it was all part of a seamlessly arranged Norway in a Nutshell day tour through top outfitter Fjord Tours, which specializes in one-day as well as multi-day fjord trips. The train and bus rides also allowed us to take in the mountain landscape and small towns along the way.

Hardangerfjord

South of Bergen, Hardangerfjord is the second-longest fjord in Norway, spanning 111 miles from the Atlantic Ocean into the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The fjord is particularly beloved among Norwegians for its apple tree blooms in the spring and the cider production in the area. Two of Hardangerfjord’s side arms are quite famous in their own right. Its longest side arm, Sørfjord, is well-known Trolltunga (the Troll’s Tongue), a horizontal rock formation that juts out from a mountain above Ringedalsvatnet Lake. Hiking Trolltunga is demanding, requiring 10-12 hours.

Hardangerfjord’s other arm, Eidfjord, allows access to Vøringsfossen, one of the most impressive waterfalls in all of Norway. A new bridge constructed in 2020 across the valley allows for extra-thrilling viewing platforms.

Geirangerfjord

Farther north, Norway’s other UNESCO-recognized fjord, Geirangerfjord, is equally awe-inspiring and gives travelers an opportunity to get up close to the legendary Seven Sisters waterfalls as they plunge some 820 feet below. (The falls are more visible as snow melts during the late spring to summer period.) Kayaking on the fjord is also popular, and local outfitter Geiranger Kayak Center at Homlong is the place to go. Other options include full-day cruises departing from the Art Nouveau town of Alesund or self-driving closer to the fjord from Alesund. Fjord Tours also offers a Geirangerfjord in a Nutshell tour.

Lysefjord

A 45-minute drive from Stavanger, Lysefjord is one of the easier fjords to get to; there are also day cruise options from Stavanger. Hikers love the region for its outdoor activities. In the Ryfylke district, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), which can be seen from below on a boat but rewards phenomenal views from the top, is a main attraction. It was even featured in Mission: Impossible-Fallout. It’s about a four-hour hike to the top and many tour operators include it as part of their itinerary for Lysefjord.

Several cruise companies, including Norway’s own Hurtigruten, offer multi-day cruises heading north or south through the fjords and stopping in cities such as Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø. Wintertime itineraries typically also include chances to see the Northern Lights. Best Reasons to Visit Italy’s Piemonte

Terrific Torino

Torino, or Turin, was the first capital of a unified Italy. Its royal lineage is on display with arcaded shopping streets, interesting café culture (adults should try a bicerin, made with espresso, chocolate and whipped cream) and grand squares. Torino offers plenty to keep families busy with its Egyptian Museum, second only to the one in Cairo, and historic and religious relics, including the Shroud of Turin and a self-portrait of Da Vinci. There’s also the Olympic Park from the 2006 games and the world-famous soccer club Juventus.

If all that isn’t enough, Torino is also known as the birthplace of the aperitif. Gaspare Campari was an apprentice drink-maker here in the 1800s and created his namesake liquor, giving birth to an entire new category of libations.

Day Trips for Days

The Piemonte offers a huge variety of interesting day trips. An absolute favorite is Lake Orta, which offers the allure of Lakes Como and Maggiore on a pint-size scale. Enjoy wandering through the town of Orta, which still feels a bit like you’ve discovered it, and the stunning waterfront.

Next up, La Venaria is the Piemonte’s answer to Versailles. Located just outside Torino, La Venaria was built for Savoy King Charles Emanuel II. The palace and gardens are some of the largest in the world and were only opened in 2007 after an extensive restoration. Perched over Torino is the Sacra di San Michele monastery, which legend claims was built by angels in the 11th century. Known as the symbolic monument of the region, it is a stunning step back in time.

For further exploration, there are hill towns galore, each with its own charms: Alba, Barolo, La Morra and the walled enclave of Castellinaldo, just to name a few.

Vino, Anyone?

The Langhe wine region here is synonymous with some of the most popular grapes in Italy — Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Nebbiolo all hail from here. Sweet wine lovers will also enjoy the popular local sparkling wine Moscato d’Asti. Try a tasting experience at one of the many wine hill-town wine shops, where you can sample from a few different producers while the kids enjoy gelato or the local playground. Or, taste the bounty produced right where you are staying at a family-friendly property like Castello Razzano.

Piemontese Flavors

The Piemonte is famous for its chocolate. Gianduja, the hazelnut-chocolate pairing similar to Nutella, was invented here. Look for bite-size biscuits with gianduja sandwiched in between, called baci di dama (lady kisses). On the savory side, seek out local specialty pasta tajarin. These long, thin, bright yellow ribbons owe their color to the abundance of farmhouse eggs used in their preparation. Favorite sauces include tomato and beef ragu as well as the classic Piemontese butter and sage version, or try some with shavings of the area’s famed white Alba truffles.

Other popular dishes are meats cooked in red wine, like beef cheek ravioli or brasato (veal) braised in Nebbiolo. Piemontese beef is well-known for its quality and flavor, so adventurous eaters should definitely seek out carne crudo, a local take on steak tartare.

Sri Lanka

The teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka is nestled off the southeast tip of India, and its welcoming locals, variety of terrain ranging from beaches to mountains, and extensive history, all in an atmosphere where tourism feels welcome and still somewhat new, make it the first destination on our 2026 list. Sri Lanka’s influences include nods to its time as a colonial chess piece — the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, the Dutch in the 17th century, and finally the British at the very end of the 18th century (when it was called Ceylon). Happily, today Sri Lanka has come into its own, beckoning visitors who crave an exotic locale not heaving with crowds. If you go, you can look forward to local experiences like visiting a home garden to watch the art of cinnamon peeling, whale watching from a private yacht or cycling through the paddy fields, all of which the CB Travel Advisor team can coordinate with our in-country partners.

Svalbard, Norway

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Want to dive headfirst into an urban destination in Southeast Asia? Ho Chi Minh City makes our 2026 list for its young and lively vibe, more energetic than the capital of Hanoi. With a number of distinct districts to explore, Ho Chi Minh City (still referred to as Saigon by the locals) offers an interesting juxtaposition of French Colonial and modern architecture, and boldly flavored, craveable food, all at a relative bargain compared to other Asian cities. Highlights include a visit to Independence Palace, formerly the home of the South Vietnamese president; Ben Thanh market, one of the biggest and oldest in town; and vibrant shopping streets like Dong Khoi. There are also multiple museums like the War Remnants Museum (content only appropriate for teens and up) that bring Vietnam’s history to life. Intrepid explorers can even crawl through the Cu Chi Tunnels about an hour’s drive away to experience firsthand what it was like for the Viet Cong during the war. Zambia

Zambia may not be on the tip of your tongue when it comes to family travel in Africa, but perhaps it should be! This up-and-coming safari destination, smack in the middle of southern Africa, offers a variety of terrain ripe for exploration. One of its biggest draws is the almost unbelievably stunning Victoria Falls on the southern border with Zimbabwe, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Stable and welcoming, Zambia has a focus on eco-tourism (Lower Zambezi Park was the world’s first carbon-neutral park), a range of luxury bush camps and, of course, animal sightings galore. Highlights are South Luangwa Park, known as the Valley of the Leopards but with plenty of hippos and elephants too; the chance to go on a walking safari; and an exceptionally rich cultural experience that tops that of many neighboring countries. Chicago

Among the best of kid-friendly U.S. city breaks, Chicago beckons families with its famous skyline, buzzy Navy Pier, fanatic sports culture, shopping on the Magnificent Mile and an array of amazing parks. And 2026 is the perfect time for a visit: It’s the centennial celebration of Route 66, which originates here at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street. Route 66 is the iconic highway that made westward travel (all the way to Santa Monica, California) a reality for Americans, and you can still visit historic preserved sections that evoke true Americana with postcard-worthy scenery, art and roadside attractions like a drive-in movie as you head west. But back to Chicago — don’t miss lakefront Grant Park, home to the Art Institute of Chicago and Buckingham Fountain; Millennium Park and its viral Bean sculpture; “Art on the Mart,” a digital art installation projected on the Merchandise Mart along the Chicago River; iconic museums like the Museum of Science and Industry; and the Obama Presidential Center (slated to open in spring), just for starters. Indonesia 

Bali bubbles up on many family destination lists, as it has become somewhat synonymous with an exotic vacation spot, and though it still has its charms, overtourism has taken a toll in recent years. Cast your sights a bit wider in Indonesia and pair a brief stop in Bali with time in less-traveled and touristed Sumba Island or Borneo. These locales offer families a glimpse into the country’s soul — on Sumba, a quick 1-hour flight from Bali, be ready for expansive grasslands and rice paddies paired with an authentic vibe, anchored by locals who believe their ancestors still live among them and build everything with a nod toward spirituality. Unforgettable adventures abound, like horseback riding on the beach, swimming with horses (yes, you read that correctly!) and next-level surfing. Make NIHI Sumba your home base — this remote luxury hotel sits amid 500 acres of pristine coastal wilderness. Vast Borneo, the third-largest island in the world, offers rainforest treks; a conservation center for sun bears, the smallest bears in the world; an orangutan sanctuary; unbelievable diving; and extensive national parks. Brittany, France

Dreamy, moody Brittany on the northwest tip of France is chock-full of fairytale moments — though it’s an easy jaunt from Paris, its medieval cobblestone streets, dramatic castles, pink granite coast, lighthouses and pirate history feel worlds away from the capital’s bright lights and chic vibe. Brittany pairs well with neighboring Normandy to the east, which has its own distinct towns, the famous tidal island abbey Mont Saint-Michel and extensive WWII historical sites. Highlights of a trip to Brittany include the walled towns of Saint-Malo, quaint Dinan, charming Rochefort-en-Terre and picture-postcard Locronan. Oyster lovers will wax poetic about Cancale; budding archaeologists will be wowed by the world’s largest collection of prehistoric upright stones (called Menhirs) in Carnac; and adventure lovers will be bowled over by exceptional surfing and kayaking. Trieste, Italy

If Italy is calling but you’d rather not jostle for position amid the tour groups in big-ticket cities like Rome and Florence, lock in on underrated Trieste. It is supremely easy to get up close and personal with this tempting historical city, nestled on Italy’s far northeast coast along the picturesque Adriatic. Known for its Roman amphitheater, the Canal Grande in the center of town, historic cafes, and stunning piazzas and castles, Trieste is growing in popularity but still feels charming. What’s more, its location pairs extremely well with Venice, Croatia and Slovenia, and it’s easy to combine into a northern Italian or Balkan itinerary. 

Chile 

Families with older children and teens will be wowed by the geological diversity of this lengthy sliver of South America, from the Atacama, the driest desert in the world, in the north to the glaciers, fjords and lakes of remotest Patagonia in the south. Zanzibar also offers experiences tailor-made for lifetime memories, like learning about plants for healing at a spice farm, visiting Prison Island and seeing the rare giant tortoises, and taking a ride on a traditional dhow boat (a wooden hulled sailing vessel originally used for maritime trade). As if that’s not tempting enough, a stay in Zanzibar is hardly complete without lounging on its legendary beaches and sampling its watersports … lots and lots of watersports, from unbeatable snorkeling to swimming with sea turtles.

Comporta, Portugal 

A mere hour and change southeast of Lisbon lies coastal Comporta — chic, yet still a bit sleepy and somehow under the radar (read: fab news for families). Much less crowded than the beaches of the Algarve, Comporta is actually a group of seven villages known as the “Herdade da Comporta” in the timeless Alentejo region. With roots harkening back to its fishing and farming past, this eco-conscious and artsy locale covets its protected lands that are tucked in between rice paddies and the Atlantic Ocean. Comporta prides itself on a slower pace of life with rhythms dictated by the tides and a commitment to design, fresh food and quiet luxe.
