Review and Highlights of Domaine de Manville

Overview

Domaine de Manville is tucked within Les Alpilles (or “little Alps”) in southwest Provence, a swath of protected natural parkland that’s dotted with sun-baked limestone ridges, gnarled olive trees and thickets of pine. The vine-draped main house at the heart of the grounds originally anchored an early 20th-century farm; several generations later, local couple Edith and Patrick Saut, who have deep ties to the area, saw its potential as a luxe oasis within this rugged region. They transformed the main house and outbuildings into a stylish resort that honors its heritage, christening it Domaine de Manville in tribute to original owner Louis-Alexandre Blanc de Manville.

Although its 5-star elegance is unmistakable, the estate warmly welcomes families, and it’s as appropriate for a getaway with young kids as it is for a romantic retreat or a couples’ escape. It retains a strong sense of history yet never comes across as staid or formal — all ages feel equally comfortable and catered to.

Unlike many Provençal resorts that close for the winter, Domaine de Manville remains open year-round. There’s no bad time to visit, but I think early autumn is the finest season to be in this part of France, as the grapevines turn rusty and the plane trees blaze with golden foliage. Our early October stay brought warm sunny days with evenings crisp enough for a sweater — perfect weather for lingering outdoors in the large outdoor courtyard that acts as the social heart of the resort. Guests gravitate here from morning to night, settling into the cushioned lounge chairs with a book or gathering around the café tables with a glass of local rosé in hand.

No matter when you visit, what really elevates the onsite experience is the people. Hospitality is second nature at Domaine de Manville — from the bell and concierge desks to the breakfast and bar staff, everyone we encountered was kind and eager to help. Service feels genuine and personal, with staff members taking pains to remember drink preferences or the way you take your morning coffee, offer insider tips and suggestions, and ensure every detail of your stay runs seamlessly. This level of care and attention is woven into the property’s DNA, and it’s another reason I found it exceptionally hard to leave.

Accommodations

With 30 rooms plus nine individual villas, Domaine de Manville feels intimate even at peak capacity. Our ground-floor Terrace Suite was expansive yet cozy, with a full sitting area and king bedroom linked by a small corridor, bookended by glass window walls that brought to life the sassy palette of charcoal, black and dusty rose. In between lay an airy bathroom with a spacious rain shower, a freestanding footed tub and two separate WCs. My favorite feature was the rear patio overlooking the courtyard, draped with a canopy of vines that allowed light to filter through yet offered just the right amount of shade and privacy.

Other accommodations range from smaller Classic Rooms and Deluxe Rooms (the latter equipped with balconies) to Manville Suites, which have skylights and private loggias, and the Prestige Suite, which evokes the air of a private apartment and includes its own rooftop deck. There’s also a Duplex Family Suite with two bedrooms, one downstairs and one in an upper loft, that’s well suited for a family of four.

The villas are generously sized and a bit more contemporary in style. Depending on the category, each has three or four bedrooms plus multiple bathrooms, an outdoor terrace, a fireplace, a dining room and a full kitchen. Although they’re centrally located on the property, you have a welcome impression of seclusion once you step inside, and there is a dedicated outdoor pool for villa guests as well.

Activities and Amenities

One of the things that sets Domaine de Manville apart for families is the variety of onsite activities that truly engage children rather than just keeping them occupied. Housed in a pair of cute structures that resemble wagon cars, the kids’ club is available in summer, on weekends and during French school holidays for ages 3-12. In addition to unstructured playtime outdoors, the daily-changing schedule might include painting, crafts, games, movies or nature hunts. Kids and farm animals go hand in hand, and they’ll love meeting the resident donkeys and pony, perhaps offering them a treat or two … the sweetest!

The large, heated outdoor pool within the courtyard is great for families — you’ll feel completely at ease splashing with the kids. But parents who want a tranquil respite or a full workout can head for the spa, which holds an indoor pool in addition to a whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room and fitness equipment. The menu of treatments ranges from massages and facials to skin and body therapies — though I didn’t make time for a session, the hourlong outdoor massage amid the pine trees sounded divine. And I love that they offer treatments just for the unique needs of teenage skin as well.

Beyond the pools and spa, there are plenty of options to stay busy. Borrow electric bikes to explore the property’s private trails and venture into the surrounding Alpilles countryside, or hike through the hills on your own or with a guide. On chilly or rainy days, take a seat in the private cinema for a film screening; if it’s nice out, try your hand at a game of pétanque (while you sip pastis, of course). Part of Domaine de Manville’s 100 acres are devoted to a permaculture garden, where seasonal fruits and vegetables are cultivated to supply the restaurant kitchens, and you can arrange a visit with a horticulturist to learn more about the process. The concierge can also book cooking classes, excursions like horseback riding, wine tastings in the estate’s cellar or private wellness sessions. There’s never an idle moment, unless you want it that way.

Golf is among Domaine de Manville’s main draws — its celebrated 18-hole course sits in the shadow of Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the area’s prettiest and most dramatic hilltop villages. If you want to fine-tune your putts and chip shots, the onsite Manville Golf Academy provides individual coaching for both adults and kids. The golf club also hosts various tournaments throughout the year; the highlight is the Manville Legends Cup, an annual October event in which professional soccer and rugby players face off against each other on the links.

At the edge of the first hole you’ll find La Cabane, a small cabin that invites relaxing over a beverage and a casual bite. The fare includes simple sandwiches, omelets, burgers and salads plus beer, wine, sodas, juices and hot drinks such as cocoa and cappuccino, accompanied by a perfect view of the ruined medieval castle perched atop Les Baux’s sheer cliffs.

Dining

Domaine de Manville offers several dining venues in addition to La Cabane, each with its own appeal. The Michelin-starred signature restaurant, L’Aupiho, is a serene cocoon of creamy hues and moody lighting, with an inventive, well-curated menu that features dishes such as pigeon with green curry, bluefin tuna with fresh basil and lentil cream, and wine-poached figs with blackcurrants and mascarpone. The wine list is equally stellar; vineyards fan out through the surrounding countryside, and you’ll find a wealth of choice bottles from the organic Les Baux-de-Provence appellation.

At the less formal Bistrot, you can feast on Provençal classics like pissaladière (flatbread with onions and anchovies), steak tartare with frites, and lamb accompanied by mushrooms and potato gratin. And breakfast, served in a soaring glass conservatory known as Le Jardin d’Hiver, starts the day on a lovely note with a lavish buffet supplemented by a small selection of egg dishes cooked to order. I recommend dolloping your baguette with a little of the honey that’s produced in the onsite beehives — it’s delicious.

At apéro time, we especially loved lounging on the cushioned sofas outside the bar, fortified by nibbles like olives, breads and a beautifully presented cheese plate. Had the temptation of dinner not lured us away, we’d probably have spent all evening there sipping one of the excellent local wines and watching the stars flicker into brilliance above the courtyard.

Local Area

Among the highlights of Les Alpilles is Carrières des Lumières, an old limestone quarry-turned-digital artscape where famous paintings are animated and projected in shifting scenes along the stone surfaces, immersing visitors in color, light and sound from every angle. It’s a treat for all ages and not to be missed. The site is only 10 minutes or so from Domaine de Manville, and the concierge desk typically keeps tickets on hand; the staff will also shuttle you there and back, a nice perk as parking can fill up in a blink. Programming changes with the seasons — the featured artists during our stay were Monet and Rousseau, as well as a kid-friendly Le Petit Prince exhibit.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, one of the most charming towns in the region, is also an easy drive from Domaine de Manville and an essential stop. This is Van Gogh country, and the self-guided Van Gogh Trail spans a mile-long path through town, with placards along the way highlighting spots central to the artist’s life and depicted in his paintings. Be sure to visit the Monastery of Saint-Paul de Masole, where he spent a year recovering from the mental health crisis that led him to sever his ear, and where he created masterpieces like Irises and The Starry Night. There are no original works on display, but you can see a reconstruction of his bedroom and other spaces that lend a sense of how patients at the monastery lived in those days.

Getting There and Around

The closest major airport to Domaine de Manville is Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), about an hour’s drive away. You can also opt for a direct TGV train from Paris to Arles or Avignon, which takes between 2 1/2 and 4 hours; the resort sits roughly halfway between the two. Although Domaine de Manville offers shuttle service to Les Baux and the nearby village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, you’ll want a car for exploring farther afield — it takes a little time to get used to driving on the narrow back roads, but navigating the region is easy.

The biggest markets in Europe, such as Vienna, Nuremberg, Cologne and Strasbourg, sit directly on Europe’s waterways. Ships holding less than 200 people moor close to city centers, so you step off the gangway and into the celebration instead of fighting through holiday-season traffic or train schedules. You can visit several markets in a single cruise, often across multiple countries, with mulled-wine tastings and carol singalongs waiting when you return on board.

Essential Tips for a Christmas Market River Cruise

When to Go

Sailings start in late November and wrap up by December 23 or 24, when most markets close for the holiday itself. (The point of markets is to find presents for loved ones, so they do not generally operate after Christmas.) If you want to visit the wooden-stall scenes while in full swing, aim for the first three weeks of December; later departures lean more toward New Year’s festivities.

Age Requirements

While river cruising has become much more accepting of children in the last decade, most do not welcome children under the age of 4, and the few that do may not have equipment to accommodate little ones, meaning you’ll have to bring your own crib and such. River cruises have expanded their programming to offer more for children; however, this is typically during the summer months, so be sure to bring items to keep kids entertained when you are onboard during a festive sailing.

Classic Rivers for Christmas Markets

The Danube

The Danube is the leader for Christmas markets, linking Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Bavaria. Even short itineraries hit four or five marquee stops. Expect monumental backdrops like St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna and Buda Castle across the river in Budapest, along with baroque town centers and plenty of strudel breaks between stalls.

The Rhine

From Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, the Rhine delivers half-timbered towns and Gothic cathedrals. Cologne’s cathedral market, Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik and Rüdesheim’s candlelit lanes headline the route during the holiday season. You’ll sample both German and French holiday traditions.

The Seine

While it may not have the density of markets found along the Rhine or Danube, the Seine offers illuminated landmarks, boutique-style markets and a festive Parisian atmosphere. Sailings typically start or end in Paris and travel to Rouen and Honfleur, pairing urban lights with medieval charm.

Can’t-Miss Ports

You won’t see every Christmas market on a single cruise, but these cities and towns stand out for their atmosphere, history and experiences. Think of them as the deciding factor when choosing your itinerary.

Basel, Switzerland

At the southern end of many Rhine routes, Basel serves as stylish gateway to the holiday season. Its main markets at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz showcase Swiss chalet stalls brimming with toys, candles and fondue-ready cheese. The towering Christmas tree, designed each year by a Swiss artist, stands before the Basel Minster, where choirs often perform beneath the Gothic arches.

Bratislava, Slovakia

While Bratislava’s Christmas market may be on the small side, it’s one of the most welcoming in Europe. Centered around the Main Square and Hviezdoslavovo Square, it showcases Slovak traditions through wooden toys, embroidered lines and hearty local dishes like lokše (potato pancakes) and mead. It’s also easy to explore with kids — compact, safe and walkable.

Budapest, Hungary

Few cities feel more magical at Christmas than Budapest. Most Danube itineraries start or end here, allowing time to explore two of Europe’s top markets: Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica. Families can also ice skate in City Park, then warm up at the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths before reboarding.

Cologne, Germany

Set beneath the twin Gothic spires of the city’s world-famous cathedral, Cologne’s Cathedral Market shimmers with red canopies and more than 150 chalets selling wooden ornaments, mugs and toys. Six additional markets spread throughout the city, including the Heinzels Winter Fairytale Market in the Old Town, where ice skaters can glide beneath fairy lights.

Nuremberg, Germany

No list of Europe’s Christmas markets is complete without Nuremberg, home to the legendary Christkinglesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous in the world. Dating back to the 1600s, the market fills the city’s Haupmarkt with more than 180 wooden stalls draped in red-and-white cloth and crowned with golden angels. Each year, the market opens with the appearance of the Chriskind, a costumed angel who reads a traditional prologue from the church balcony. A dedicated Children’s Market features a carousel, Ferris wheel and toy workshops.

Paris

While the Danube and Rhine host the most traditional Christmas routes, Paris adds its own sparkle to the season with Christmas stalls set up along the Champs-Élysées. Cruises begin or end here, where the Tuileries Garden Market offers ice skating, Ferris wheel rides and French specialties like crêpes.

Passau, Germany

Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, and its baroque skyline is dominated by the twin spires of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Here, the city’s market unfolds in the square at the cathedral’s steps, where white canopies glow against the pink and gold façade of the Old Town. Be sure to step inside the church for an organ concert as it houses one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

Regensburg, Germany

One of Bavaria’s most atmospheric quarters, Regensburg’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobblestone lanes and medieval towers. During the holidays, the entire Old Town glows with lights, but the crown jewel is the Thurn und Taxis Palace Christmas Market, held within the courtyard of the princely palace. Choirs perform by open fires and the scent of roasted nuts fills the air.

Rüdesheim, Germany

Tucked between the vineyards and riverbanks, Rüdesheim is a cozy German town with a Christmas Market of the Nations, drawing artisans from around the world. The market fills the cobbled lanes of Drosselgasse with a mix of international crafts, music and street food. Visitors can try Swiss raclette, Finnish salmon or local Riesling-spiked glühwein.

Strasbourg, France

Known as the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg hosts one of Europe’s oldest and grandest markets, dating back to 1570. Nearly 300 chalets line the Grand-Île, surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral with twinkling lights and Alsatian specialties like bredele cookies. The main Chriskindelsmärik at Place Broglie buzzes with music and, as the city straddles the border of France and Germany, offers the best of both traditions in one place.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s main Christkindlmarkt fills Rathauplatz with more than 150 stalls stretching across City Hall Park, selling ornaments, pastries and hot drinks, and an ice trail looping in between. Meanwhile, smaller markets like those at Schönbrunn Palace and Spittelberg provide a quieter atmosphere with less crowds that are still just as magical. When visiting, don’t miss a stop in one of the city’s traditional cafes for a slice of Sachertorte.

A historic Art Deco landmark, the four-story hotel retains its 1940 exterior, giving way to a modern boutique hotel within. Rooms and suites are decidedly sleek but also feature subtle nods to Mexican heritage in the form of tilework, ceramics, art and woven textiles. Families will want to opt for a two-queen room complete with balcony, measuring 450 square feet, or explore connecting room options. (It’s worth noting that double-queen rooms are not so common in Mexico City, which makes the property an especially great fit with kids.) A basket of local snacks, freshly squeezed juices and small alebrije souvenirs (colorful folk art creatures) awaited us in our room, a standard for all guests.

Onsite Amenities

Among the fun extras on offer are bikes to borrow (ride around the quiet neighborhood streets or even take your wheels to the Museo Soumaya); a nightly social hour with small bites and wines to swirl and sip; morning coffee and tea service; and yoga mats upon request. In addition to the lounge, there’s a rooftop lap pool for cooling off.

The onsite restaurant Pepe Mesa Española offers breakfast and room service, but you’ll want to snag a table on the outdoor patio for dinner and tuck into delicious tapas such as Iberian dumplings, smoked peppers and heirloom tomato tartare, all as you watch locals and tourists amble about the fashionable neighborhood. The hotel team can also share local recommendations and help with reservations.

Upstairs, La Caña is a great spot to unwind after a day about town or after dinner. Families, especially with teens, can hang out and enjoy the views. And if you feel like partying with your crew, a DJ plays music Thursday through Saturday evenings.

What to See, Do & Eat Nearby: The Highlights

Museo Soumaya

With an amorphous shape covered in shimmering tiles, this ambitious art museum is hard to miss. Housing the vast collection of telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim Helu and his late wife (for whom the museum is named), Museo Soumaya showcases works from pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica to 19th- and 20th-century Mexican art to French Impressionism. Admission is free.

National Museum of Anthropology

Spread across 11 galleries, this comprehensive museum within Chapultepec Park is the largest and most visited in all of Mexico. Ogle artifacts such as a massive carved Aztec calendar stone, basalt heads from the Olmec civilization and a replica of Moctezuma’s feathered headdress (the original is in Vienna). Tickets are required.

Coyoacán and Frida Kahlo Museum

The bohemian neighborhood of Coyoacán and its central market are absolutely worth a visit, though the main attraction in the area is inarguably Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s home-turned-museum. Walk through the living space, well-preserved kitchen and bedrooms as you view still lifes and self-portraits, personal items and art supplies that chronicle Frida’s life and meteoric rise as an artist. An adjacent, crimson-painted museum, Casa Kahlo, dedicated to Frida’s family relationships and displaying several never-seen-before belongings, just opened this fall. Advance timed tickets required.

As for where to eat, consider top restaurants Masala y Maíz, which brilliantly blends Indian and Mexican ingredients and flavors, and Ling Ling, where you’ll enjoy delicious Asian fare with the gorgeous twilight views. Or join the lively taco tour, with stops at five taquerias, through Sabores México Food Tours.

Among the best of kid-friendly U.S. city breaks, Chicago beckons families with its famous skyline, buzzy Navy Pier, fanatic sports culture, shopping on the Magnificent Mile and an array of amazing parks. And 2026 is the perfect time for a visit: It’s the centennial celebration of Route 66, which originates here at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street. Full Review and Highlights of The Swag

A Heartfelt Welcome

The Swag sits on 250 acres toward North Carolina’s western tip, an hour or so from Asheville and a stone’s throw from the Tennessee border. Its twisting, thickly wooded drive climbs skyward as you leave the tiny town of Maggie Valley, and after you pass through the entrance gates, you’ll arrive at a bright, cheery cabin where a genial greeter is waiting to make you feel right at home. The staff takes your car off to the parking area and your luggage to your room; meanwhile, you can unwind with a glass of wine, Champagne or another welcome beverage as the greeter introduces you to the lay of the land and jots down your dinner selections for that evening.

You’ll also pose for a snapshot to be tucked into the latest of the many albums lining the shelves, a tradition that goes back to The Swag’s origins. Repeat guests are common here, and some of them have years’ worth of photos that they enjoy flipping through each time they return, reminiscing about past adventures.

Upon continuing to the main house (properly known as the Swag House), another sweet tradition awaits: You’re invited to choose a knobbly walking stick from the array in the lobby, each adorned with a badge designed to commemorate the current year, and then given a personalized tree-slice tag to attach. Many regulars either store their sticks at the property or bring them back for every visit, adding tag after tag to their expanding collection.

The walking sticks aren’t mere conversation pieces — they’re practical gifts, given that hiking the mountain trails is one of this region’s greatest draws. But more on that in a bit.

The Setting

Locals call the gentle dip between mountain peaks a “swag,” and this natural feature gives the property both its name and its outrageous views. The main house and adjacent structures hug a sloping expanse of well-manicured grass, fringed with native greenery such as pines, rhododendrons and hydrangeas, and clusters of chairs along the lawn and wide verandas offer a front-row seat to the Blue Ridge and the Smokies in the distance. Day or evening, the panorama is glorious; even better, because there are only several dozen guests at any given time, you can savor it in calm and quiet. From our very first afternoon, I could feel the pressures of daily life rolling off my shoulders as I set a porchfront rocker in motion and took in the overlapping ridges with their distinctive bluish haze.

The Swag welcomes all ages, but it leans adult-oriented. I was there on a girls’ getaway with my best friend and most of our fellow guests were couples or multigenerational families with grown kids. It’s perfect for an empty-nest vacation or a romantic retreat. (In fact, current owners Annie and David Colquitt first stayed here for their honeymoon in 2011, and were so smitten with the property that they bought it when founders Deener and Dan Matthews were ready to pass the torch in 2018 — talk about coming full circle!)

Although the buildings at The Swag are rustic, clad in weathered wood and rough-hewn stone, the trappings within are anything but. Fine linens, tailored draperies, luxe fixtures and Oriental rugs combine for an air of refined comfort that isn’t the least bit stuffy. Every detail is precisely overseen, from the daily supply of fresh apples in the lobby to the thermal mat at the coffee bar that keeps the earthenware mugs warm and ready, and yet somehow it all feels effortless.

A cozy living room anchors the Swag House, with ample seating arranged in view of the massive stone fireplace. The well-worn timbers and beams are the bones of an 18th-century church that was brought in from Tennessee, their patina offset by gleaming hardwood floors and colorful print textiles — inviting surrounds to catch up with other guests, settle in with a book on a rainy day or indulge in the freshly baked cookies that are put out each afternoon. The Swag’s experts-in-residence, who include artists, naturalists, musicians, photographers and historians, often host talks here as well, which are quite interesting and well worth a listen.

Accommodations

The Swag has 18 guest quarters in all, divided between the Swag House and standalone cottages. We stayed in the two-story Chestnut Lodge, comprised of five rooms grouped around a handsome wood-paneled library and fireside sitting area. Each is named to honor a person with deep ties to the property, and ours, dubbed Davy’s Room, was incredibly spacious and comfortable, with sink-right-in bedding, leather club chairs facing a fireplace and a wet bar with a Nespresso coffeemaker plus a small fridge stocked with complimentary snacks, water and sodas. A steam shower and heated towel rack in the bathroom were nice touches for the cool mountain mornings.

Thoughtful extras brought us smiles throughout our stay. Our in-room radio was playing bluegrass music when we arrived, setting an apt sense of place; bite-size treats appeared on the wet bar at turndown; and we found little gifts such as embossed leather bookmarks waiting on the pillows. It’s as if the staff knows exactly what will make guests feel pampered without saying a word.

TIP: Chestnut Lodge can be reserved in its entirety if you’re traveling with a group of extended family or friends. Note that the upper-floor rooms require climbing a flight of stairs, so they’re not ideal for guests with limited mobility.

The Swag House contains six guestrooms, and the handful of cottages and suites ranges from three-bedroom Trinity Cottage to secluded Hummingbird, which backs up to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Several accommodations have sleeper sofas to supplement the king beds. Depending on the specific unit you book, amenities might include an outdoor shower, a private balcony or terrace, an indoor or outdoor soaking tub, and/or a private sauna. One suite, Mountain Laurel, even comes with its own family game room.

Wifi is available throughout the resort, but there are no TVs in the guestrooms or common areas, and I loved the built-in digital detox. Screen time can’t begin to compete with the natural scenery that stretches in every direction, or watching hummingbirds flit around the hanging feeder at the main house — more than I’ve ever seen in one place.

Dining

Cuisine at The Swag is plentiful, hearty and exceptionally delicious, with much of the produce grown onsite and many other ingredients locally sourced. Breakfast brings light fare such as steel-cut oatmeal and Greek yogurt with muesli in addition to more robust selections, like a chorizo-laced Mexican scramble, cinnamon vanilla French toast and (my favorite) a tasty breakfast sandwich with chive scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar and guajillo chile aioli. Lunch is a takeaway affair — if you’re headed out on a hike, the kitchen will pack your meal in an insulated backpack, or they’ll prepare a picnic basket or brown bag for guests staying closer to home. (If you see Swag Bars on the lunchtime dessert menu, don’t hesitate; these rich, chocolatey treats are a must-try!) Each week, the chef also hosts a midday alfresco picnic on nearby Gooseberry Knob, with classics like burgers, grilled fish and fried chicken and a buffet of sides, salads and sweets.

As evening draws near, everyone gathers in the open-air Dogtrot, a breezeway off the lobby, to mingle over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. This was a highlight of our stay — it was great fun getting to know the other guests in such a relaxed, convivial setting, and the nibbles are just enough to kindle an appetite, from charcuterie with Carolina honey to Southern-inflected canapés. At 6:30, the staff rings the dinner bell — the signal for everyone to assemble in the living room for announcements about the next day’s events as well as any birthdays, anniversaries or other milestones guests are celebrating — and then you’re shown to your table in the dining room or, in good weather, on the lovely open-air porch.

While the food at breakfast and lunch is fantastic, dinner is the real star. The four-course menu changes daily, with at least one fish and one vegetarian dish among the mains; our choices included rack of lamb with harissa, fondant potatoes and romano beans; wahoo with purple rice, mustard greens and miso beurre blanc; and gnocchi with spinach, grana padano cheese and beetroot pomodoro. First and second courses are equally inventive, and the desserts, such as a luscious chocolate-chip skillet cookie topped with ice cream, take things over the top.

Activities & Amenities

True to The Swag’s easygoing vibe, you can be as active or as idle as you like. The daily schedule, delivered to your room, includes a rotating blend of guided hikes, wellness sessions like yoga (held on a pretty outdoor deck), barista and craft cocktail lessons in the Swag Bar, tours of the gardens and apiaries, and creative workshops, just to scratch the surface. The staff is happy to arrange wine tastings with a collection of bottles from the cellar, and multi-day cooking classes are held regularly throughout the year. If you’re a rider, you can book an excursion on horseback via The Swag’s nearby sister resort, Cataloochee Ranch.

On the ground floor of Chestnut Lodge you’ll find The Still, which houses three spa treatment rooms and offers a menu of massages, facials and body treatments. We both had amazing facials that left us glowing and totally relaxed, followed by a long soak in the hot tub that sits a quick walk away down the hill. It’s really more like a small swimming pool, and the trees frame perfect views of the mountain peaks as you luxuriate amid the jets that roil the steaming water.

If you prefer to explore the surrounding terrain on your own, the staff is happy to provide a hiking map along with pointers about the various routes. There are also pickleball courts, badminton courts and a croquet field available at your leisure, a stocked pond for casting a line, lawn games such as cornhole and a small gym. Jigsaw puzzles sit in various states of completion on tables in the living room and Chestnut Lodge, and as you chat with your travel companion or other guests, you’ll probably find yourself searching for the right piece without thinking twice about it.

As your stay draws to a close and you get ready to make the winding drive back down the mountain, you’ll understand why so many people are drawn here year after year. The Swag has mastered something rare in the superfast pace of life these days: the art of making strangers feel like family for a short time, connected by face-to-face conversation rather than by text or social media. And when you come back (which you likely will), don’t forget to pack your walking stick — another tag will be waiting to celebrate your return.

Things to Know

• Room rates are based on double occupancy and include all meals, evening hors d’oeuvres, nonalcoholic beverages and some activities.
• There’s never a bad time to visit, but fall is especially beautiful with the brilliant Blue Ridge foliage all around. Leaf-peeping season is in high demand, so book early! The property closes for much of the winter. Exact dates vary, but for 2025-26, closure is from mid-December through mid-February.
• Asheville Regional Airport is about an hour away by car, and the major hubs of Charlotte (CLT) and Atlanta (ATL) are within a 3- to 3 1/2-hour drive.

NIHI Review and Highlights for Families

CB: Could you share a bit about Sumba and getting there? How does it compare to Bali?

Amie: Just like Bali, Sumba is an island in the Indonesian archipelago. It’s an hour flight from Bali, and NIHI can assist with coordinating the domestic transfers [between Denpasar, Bali and Sumba’s Tambolaka airport].

The islands are very different. Bali is beautiful and culturally rich, but it is also coping with overtourism. Sumba is very undeveloped and that’s really what makes it special. NIHI sits on more than 500 acres of private land, including a gorgeous stretch of sand that guests share only with the horses. Many travelers pair the two destinations, so it doesn’t need to be an either-or situation.

When you land, NIHI picks you up in an open-air safari-style vehicle and this is the beginning of the adventure. It’s about a 90-minute drive to the property, and as soon as you leave the airport, you see these very visually distinctive thatched homes with towering, pointed roofs, as the Sumbanese believe they live with their ancestors, and they build their homes with this connection to the spiritual world … I’ve never seen a place like this.

CB: What are the accommodations like?

Amie: NIHI comprises a variety of gorgeous, sprawling one- to multi-bedroom villas, making it especially well-suited for multigen travel. They are spread across the property and all have plunge pools and ocean views.

CB: What are some of the activities on and off-property?

Amie: One of the core activities is their surfing program, which many families enjoy. The swells on Sumba are the stuff of legend, especially “Occy’s Left” — a left‑hand point break directly off the shore of the resort, named for world champion surfer Mark Occhilupo and one of the most coveted waves in the world. Even beginner surfers can learn at calmer spots like Coconut Cove, though, and the property also offers surf camp for kids.

Another big highlight is the equine program at the onsite Sandalwood Stables, which includes everything from horseback riding at all experience levels to swimming with the horses. There’s also the Kids Pony Club, which lets younger children participate in grooming and feeding (alongside the stable team) as well as learning to ride. There’s even a small chocolate factory onsite that hosts chocolate-making classes, which kiddos will love.

Last but not least, engaging with the local community is another big draw for families. The Sumba Foundation, a nonprofit developed in tandem with the property, is very much part of NIHI’s DNA and guest experience. The foundation receives support from The Burch Family Foundation, which is owned by NIHI owner Chris Burch (though it’s a separate entity from the resort). This partnership helps to expand the impact of programs that support fresh water, healthcare such as malaria mitigation and eye care, education and schools, and more. Families staying at the resort can go to a local water project, visit a malaria clinic or even volunteer at a local school during lunch.

CB: How was the food?

Amie: The food is all delicious with a wide array of fresh options. The seafood and sushi were incredible! Meals are all included in your stay — there are several restaurants that offer everything from a multi-course omakase-style dinner at Kaboku, which can accommodate up to six guests, to more casual dining with a live grill right on the sand. Ingredients are sourced from the property’s own organic garden.

CB: There seems to be a very strong wellness component too. Can you tell us about it?

Amie: The Nihioka Spa is one of the most unique spas anywhere — a private space integrated into the wild landscape that’s a destination unto itself. You can choose to have your body and facial treatments in these open-air bales with the sound of the waves crashing. The fragrant body oil used for treatments is made locally and infused with botanicals and spices such as turmeric, coriander, galangal, cinnamon and more. One of the signature experiences is the spa safari, which includes a hike, horseback ride or open-air vehicle transfer to the Nihioka Valley; a fresh breakfast or lunch served on a private treehouse platform; spa treatments of your choice in an individual bale; and, if you want, time to enjoy the beach and pool nearby.

A yoga pavilion overlooking the beach hosts multiple classes a day. There are also meditation, breathwork and fitness classes. Some of these can definitely be customized for families to participate in together.

CB: Could NIHI Sumba be part of a larger Indonesia itinerary?

Amie: Absolutely! Indonesia boasts such incredible nature and culture. You could easily pair time at NIHI Sumba with exploring Bali before or after.

CB: Is there a preferred time of year to visit?

Amie: It’s really a year-round destination, but the months from November through March are the wet season. The dry season, April to October, corresponds with our summer travel season and many families like Indonesia for this reason since it’s summer break for kids.

Family-Friendly Review of Hotel L’Orologio Roma

Arriving in Rome, I didn’t know what to expect. I’d heard stories of tourists swarming like locusts around must-see attractions and of pickpockets with seemingly invisible fingers — but also, of course, of the city’s beauty, of its unmistakable Italian feel, of its vibrancy. The latter is the Rome you’ll find at Hotel L’Orologio Roma.

A Timeless History

Oroglio translates to “clock” in Italian. L’Orologio Roma and its sister hotels in Florence and Venice are all watch-themed, as the owner is a collector of fine watches. Each room is named after a different watch in the owner’s collection, and clock motifs abound throughout the hotel decor.

Location

The hotel is located on a busy street in the center of Rome, just a few blocks away from the ancient mystery of the Pantheon. On a rainy Tuesday, I wandered the surrounding neighborhood to stumble upon the structure, rain dripping in through its infamous open ceiling — pretty awe-inspiring stuff.

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are a 20-minute walk away, during which you’ll encounter a few less famous but similarly inspiring sites like the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains). And just beyond the Forum is the Colosseum. Popular destinations like the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are also close and walkable. For those brave enough to attempt the Roman metro, there’s a stop just down the block from the hotel.

Rome’s lively Trastevere neighborhood lies just on the other side of the river, an easy and pleasant walk through cobbled streets and ancient buildings shrouded in vines. The quaint trattorie in Trastevere are not to be missed — I ate some of the best pasta all’amatriciana on my exploration through the area.

Vatican City is a manageable walk, though it may be long for young kids at around 30 minutes. I found it an immensely pleasant stroll through real Roman neighborhoods, away from the hubbub of the tourist center. I smiled at old nonnas doing their daily shopping and enjoyed delicious crispy Roman-style pizza in a small park on my way.

For dining and nightlife, as well as a few spots for pre-dinner aperitivi, the hotel’s kind concierge will provide plenty of local recommendations, both nearby and in Trastevere.

Dining

I would be remiss not to highlight Hotel L’Orologio Roma’s main attraction: its stunning rooftop deck. Complete with 180-degree views of central Rome, the rooftop deck is perhaps the most amazing feature of the hotel.

Complimentary breakfast is served on the rooftop each morning with both familiar and international options: yogurt and granola, scrambled eggs and bacon, local cheeses, smoked meats, pastries and breads (and even mimosas for a truly indulgent start to the day). The staff will make you whatever coffee you please — I indulged in multiple cappuccinos during my stay.

At night, the rooftop transforms into a bar and restaurant with snacks and heartier Italian fare. It’s a lovely place for an aperitivo before heading out on the town or for a nightcap after a long Roman dinner. Even if you’re not a drinker, it’s worth heading up to the rooftop just for the amazing view of the city at night.

Accommodations

Hotel L’Orologio Roma includes single and double rooms as well as family suites suitable for any type of guest. My single room was spacious and faced onto a quiet courtyard away from the busy street. Rooms are furnished in a tasteful modern style with splashes of chartreuse or rust.

Bathrooms include bidets, rain showers and luxury toiletries. I was delighted by the turn-down service complete with a delicious chocolate and slippers, and treated myself to a chamomile tea with the room’s included kettle and assortment of teas and coffees. Rooms come with daily complimentary sparkling and still water (greatly appreciated on my long walks through the city) as well as an assortment of fruit upon check-in.

Amenities

Amenities are exceptional, especially for an urban hotel. An onsite gym satisfies any fitness addict, though I found with all the walking I was plenty exercised. The concierge went above and beyond to help me get a feel for the city and local attractions as well as recommending local bars, restaurants and little-known attractions. I felt well taken care of — when my shirt (one of just a few I brought for the trip) ripped, the concierge hand-delivered a sewing kit to my door.

Things to Know

The fabulously convenient location does come with some downsides: street-facing rooms get noisy and stay noisy at night. For guests and families concerned about noise, ask for a room that faces away from the street. The location feels safe and with a 24-hour concierge, I didn’t worry about security at all.
