Review and Highlights of Domaine de Manville

Overview

Domaine de Manville is tucked within Les Alpilles (or “little Alps”) in southwest Provence, a swath of protected natural parkland that’s dotted with sun-baked limestone ridges, gnarled olive trees and thickets of pine. The vine-draped main house at the heart of the grounds originally anchored an early 20th-century farm; several generations later, local couple Edith and Patrick Saut, who have deep ties to the area, saw its potential as a luxe oasis within this rugged region. They transformed the main house and outbuildings into a stylish resort that honors its heritage, christening it Domaine de Manville in tribute to original owner Louis-Alexandre Blanc de Manville.

Although its 5-star elegance is unmistakable, the estate warmly welcomes families, and it’s as appropriate for a getaway with young kids as it is for a romantic retreat or a couples’ escape. It retains a strong sense of history yet never comes across as staid or formal — all ages feel equally comfortable and catered to.

Unlike many Provençal resorts that close for the winter, Domaine de Manville remains open year-round. There’s no bad time to visit, but I think early autumn is the finest season to be in this part of France, as the grapevines turn rusty and the plane trees blaze with golden foliage. Our early October stay brought warm sunny days with evenings crisp enough for a sweater — perfect weather for lingering outdoors in the large outdoor courtyard that acts as the social heart of the resort. Guests gravitate here from morning to night, settling into the cushioned lounge chairs with a book or gathering around the café tables with a glass of local rosé in hand.

No matter when you visit, what really elevates the onsite experience is the people. Hospitality is second nature at Domaine de Manville — from the bell and concierge desks to the breakfast and bar staff, everyone we encountered was kind and eager to help. Service feels genuine and personal, with staff members taking pains to remember drink preferences or the way you take your morning coffee, offer insider tips and suggestions, and ensure every detail of your stay runs seamlessly. This level of care and attention is woven into the property’s DNA, and it’s another reason I found it exceptionally hard to leave.

Accommodations

With 30 rooms plus nine individual villas, Domaine de Manville feels intimate even at peak capacity. Our ground-floor Terrace Suite was expansive yet cozy, with a full sitting area and king bedroom linked by a small corridor, bookended by glass window walls that brought to life the sassy palette of charcoal, black and dusty rose. In between lay an airy bathroom with a spacious rain shower, a freestanding footed tub and two separate WCs. My favorite feature was the rear patio overlooking the courtyard, draped with a canopy of vines that allowed light to filter through yet offered just the right amount of shade and privacy.

Other accommodations range from smaller Classic Rooms and Deluxe Rooms (the latter equipped with balconies) to Manville Suites, which have skylights and private loggias, and the Prestige Suite, which evokes the air of a private apartment and includes its own rooftop deck. There’s also a Duplex Family Suite with two bedrooms, one downstairs and one in an upper loft, that’s well suited for a family of four.

The villas are generously sized and a bit more contemporary in style. Depending on the category, each has three or four bedrooms plus multiple bathrooms, an outdoor terrace, a fireplace, a dining room and a full kitchen. Although they’re centrally located on the property, you have a welcome impression of seclusion once you step inside, and there is a dedicated outdoor pool for villa guests as well.

Activities and Amenities

One of the things that sets Domaine de Manville apart for families is the variety of onsite activities that truly engage children rather than just keeping them occupied. Housed in a pair of cute structures that resemble wagon cars, the kids’ club is available in summer, on weekends and during French school holidays for ages 3-12. In addition to unstructured playtime outdoors, the daily-changing schedule might include painting, crafts, games, movies or nature hunts. Kids and farm animals go hand in hand, and they’ll love meeting the resident donkeys and pony, perhaps offering them a treat or two … the sweetest!

The large, heated outdoor pool within the courtyard is great for families — you’ll feel completely at ease splashing with the kids. But parents who want a tranquil respite or a full workout can head for the spa, which holds an indoor pool in addition to a whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room and fitness equipment. The menu of treatments ranges from massages and facials to skin and body therapies — though I didn’t make time for a session, the hourlong outdoor massage amid the pine trees sounded divine. And I love that they offer treatments just for the unique needs of teenage skin as well.

Beyond the pools and spa, there are plenty of options to stay busy. Borrow electric bikes to explore the property’s private trails and venture into the surrounding Alpilles countryside, or hike through the hills on your own or with a guide. On chilly or rainy days, take a seat in the private cinema for a film screening; if it’s nice out, try your hand at a game of pétanque (while you sip pastis, of course). Part of Domaine de Manville’s 100 acres are devoted to a permaculture garden, where seasonal fruits and vegetables are cultivated to supply the restaurant kitchens, and you can arrange a visit with a horticulturist to learn more about the process. The concierge can also book cooking classes, excursions like horseback riding, wine tastings in the estate’s cellar or private wellness sessions. There’s never an idle moment, unless you want it that way.

Golf is among Domaine de Manville’s main draws — its celebrated 18-hole course sits in the shadow of Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the area’s prettiest and most dramatic hilltop villages. If you want to fine-tune your putts and chip shots, the onsite Manville Golf Academy provides individual coaching for both adults and kids. The golf club also hosts various tournaments throughout the year; the highlight is the Manville Legends Cup, an annual October event in which professional soccer and rugby players face off against each other on the links.

At the edge of the first hole you’ll find La Cabane, a small cabin that invites relaxing over a beverage and a casual bite. The fare includes simple sandwiches, omelets, burgers and salads plus beer, wine, sodas, juices and hot drinks such as cocoa and cappuccino, accompanied by a perfect view of the ruined medieval castle perched atop Les Baux’s sheer cliffs.

Dining

Domaine de Manville offers several dining venues in addition to La Cabane, each with its own appeal. The Michelin-starred signature restaurant, L’Aupiho, is a serene cocoon of creamy hues and moody lighting, with an inventive, well-curated menu that features dishes such as pigeon with green curry, bluefin tuna with fresh basil and lentil cream, and wine-poached figs with blackcurrants and mascarpone. The wine list is equally stellar; vineyards fan out through the surrounding countryside, and you’ll find a wealth of choice bottles from the organic Les Baux-de-Provence appellation.

At the less formal Bistrot, you can feast on Provençal classics like pissaladière (flatbread with onions and anchovies), steak tartare with frites, and lamb accompanied by mushrooms and potato gratin. And breakfast, served in a soaring glass conservatory known as Le Jardin d’Hiver, starts the day on a lovely note with a lavish buffet supplemented by a small selection of egg dishes cooked to order. I recommend dolloping your baguette with a little of the honey that’s produced in the onsite beehives — it’s delicious.

At apéro time, we especially loved lounging on the cushioned sofas outside the bar, fortified by nibbles like olives, breads and a beautifully presented cheese plate. Had the temptation of dinner not lured us away, we’d probably have spent all evening there sipping one of the excellent local wines and watching the stars flicker into brilliance above the courtyard.

Local Area

Among the highlights of Les Alpilles is Carrières des Lumières, an old limestone quarry-turned-digital artscape where famous paintings are animated and projected in shifting scenes along the stone surfaces, immersing visitors in color, light and sound from every angle. It’s a treat for all ages and not to be missed. The site is only 10 minutes or so from Domaine de Manville, and the concierge desk typically keeps tickets on hand; the staff will also shuttle you there and back, a nice perk as parking can fill up in a blink. Programming changes with the seasons — the featured artists during our stay were Monet and Rousseau, as well as a kid-friendly Le Petit Prince exhibit.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, one of the most charming towns in the region, is also an easy drive from Domaine de Manville and an essential stop. This is Van Gogh country, and the self-guided Van Gogh Trail spans a mile-long path through town, with placards along the way highlighting spots central to the artist’s life and depicted in his paintings. Be sure to visit the Monastery of Saint-Paul de Masole, where he spent a year recovering from the mental health crisis that led him to sever his ear, and where he created masterpieces like Irises and The Starry Night. There are no original works on display, but you can see a reconstruction of his bedroom and other spaces that lend a sense of how patients at the monastery lived in those days.

Getting There and Around

The closest major airport to Domaine de Manville is Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), about an hour’s drive away. You can also opt for a direct TGV train from Paris to Arles or Avignon, which takes between 2 1/2 and 4 hours; the resort sits roughly halfway between the two. Although Domaine de Manville offers shuttle service to Les Baux and the nearby village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, you’ll want a car for exploring farther afield — it takes a little time to get used to driving on the narrow back roads, but navigating the region is easy.

Tips for Skiing in Europe with Kids 

Finding the Best Winter Flights to Europe 

Flexibility is the key to finding the best airfare that gets you to the main European hubs. Geneva, Zurich, Munich and Milan are all excellent starting points for skiing in Europe. Once on the content, you can take a smaller connecting flight for the final leg of your trip, or add a bit of fun to your journey by traveling via train on Swiss Rail, which can easily get you to the top ski destinations in Austria, Germany, France and Italy. The trick is to find the best fare for the longest leg of your journey (example: NYC to Zurich) and then using local transportation options to get to your final destination.  

Let’s break it down into simpler terms:  

Train travel. Swiss Rail can connect you directly to many ski towns, and high-speed trains make it easy to hop between countries. 

Budget airlines. Companies like EasyJet and Ryanair offer affordable regional flights if you want to get closer to your final destination. 

Multi-city itinerary. Fly into one city and out of another to maximize your time on the slopes and explore more ski destinations throughout your trip.  

Choosing the Best Country for Your Family Ski Trip 

All the main ski resorts in Europe have programs of some kind for children, but like all places, some are better than others. This is where the research and working with a knowledgeable Travel Advisor comes into play. To avoid being overwhelmed by all the options, choose the country you want to experience and then worry about where to ski. 

If you aren’t sure which country is right for you, consider each country’s style: 

Switzerland

Iconic mountain scenery, well-organized resorts, and impeccable ski schools (but expect premium prices).  

Best for: picture-perfect ski villages and reliable snow

France

Huge interconnected ski areas with incredible terrain, plus it’s a great excuse to do a stopover in Paris on your way to or from the resort.  

Best for: extensive ski-in/ski-out resorts with varied slopes 

Austria

Classic alpine charm, great après-ski and fantastic ski schools.  

Best for: affordability and a welcoming vibe 

Italy

Stunning Dolomite landscapes, delicious food, and relaxed ski culture.  

Best for: families who love great skiing with an even better culinary experience 

Germany

Smaller, family-friendly resorts that are easy to navigate.  

Best for: low-key, budget-friendly ski trips

TIP: If you have one week, pick one country. If you have two weeks, you can explore a second European ski destination.

Booking a Ski Package vs. DIY Planning 

Skiing in Europe can be logistically complex, which is why many families opt for ski package holidays that include lodging, lift tickets, meals, and even childcare. These packages can save time and money. However, I’ve found that many of these bundles are not tailored for families, particularly those with young children who are too young to ski or need a childcare/ski lesson combination. Picking the Right Family-Friendly Ski Resort 

While famous resorts like Zermatt, Chamonix and Verbier are spectacular, they can also be huge and overwhelming to navigate, which isn’t always ideal for families. There are many small and medium-size resorts in Europe that you may not have heard of but are still fantastic with and without children. Remember: Never judge quality based on name recognition.

For me, the size doesn’t make these resorts any less kid-friendly; it just takes more time and effort to get around. This is why, if we opt for a larger resort, we usually choose to stay in a full-service hotel with the staff and services that make navigation a breeze. For this reason, we recommend an array of amazing kid-friendly ski hotels and resorts on Ciao Bambino that work perfectly for independent travel. 

If you are looking for a smaller ski resort experience, consider a few of my favorite destinations:

Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Fantastic beginner zones, great ski schools and sunny slopes. As of the 2024-25 season, it is also part of the Vail Resorts EPIC Pass. 

Mürren, Switzerland. A charming car-free village with amazing scenery and easy runs for kids. 

Alta Badia, Italy (Dolomites). Great food, gentle slopes and stunning views. 

Val Thorens, France. The highest ski resort in Europe, offering tons of kid-friendly slopes. 

Davos, Switzerland. A massive resort, but with well-developed family zones and ski schools. 

Ski Lessons: What to Expect in Europe 

Ski lessons in Europe run very differently than they do in the United States. Some resorts offer only weeklong options and no standalone weekend lessons.It’s critical to ensure you understand the ski lesson set up in your target area before booking your trip!

Many resorts have a mix of options, including official country ski schools (like the Swiss Ski School) and independent English-speaking ski schools (like Altitude Ski School in Verbier or Summit Ski School in Zermatt).

The main thing to think about is the infrastructure you need for the age and ability of your kids. For example, larger resorts like Davos have very developed family-focused features, including dedicated play zones for young kids. Resorts like Crans-Montana that specifically cater to families differentiate runs based on age and ability; Crans-Montana also has an incredible standalone beginner zone away from all those scary fast skiers. 

Beyond Skiing: Other Winter Activities 

Not everyone in the family may want to ski all day, every day. Luckily, European ski resorts offer plenty of off-the-slopes fun, including: 

Sledding and toboggan runs. Many resorts have thrilling sledding trails (Zermatt has one that’s 10 km long). 

Snowshoeing and winter hiking. A great way to take in the scenery. 

Ice skating and indoor pools. Most larger resorts have rinks or pools for non-skiers. 

Alpine spas and wellness centers. Lots of hotels have incredible spa facilities with heated outdoor pools overlooking the mountains. 

Après-ski and mountain dining. Many European ski resorts have mountain-top restaurants serving gourmet meals with breathtaking views—so take time to enjoy long, scenic lunches! 

A family ski trip to Europe takes some planning, but the reward is an unforgettable escape filled with stunning scenery, world-class skiing and a totally different family experience. Whether you’re carving down the slopes of Switzerland, savoring Italian cuisine in the Dolomites after a long day of snowboarding/skiing, enjoying mountain-side après-ski in France or exploring Austria’s cozy ski villages, there’s something truly special about skiing in Europe with kids.

The biggest markets in Europe, such as Vienna, Nuremberg, Cologne and Strasbourg, sit directly on Europe’s waterways. Ships holding less than 200 people moor close to city centers, so you step off the gangway and into the celebration instead of fighting through holiday-season traffic or train schedules. You can visit several markets in a single cruise, often across multiple countries, with mulled-wine tastings and carol singalongs waiting when you return on board.

Essential Tips for a Christmas Market River Cruise

When to Go

Sailings start in late November and wrap up by December 23 or 24, when most markets close for the holiday itself. (The point of markets is to find presents for loved ones, so they do not generally operate after Christmas.) If you want to visit the wooden-stall scenes while in full swing, aim for the first three weeks of December; later departures lean more toward New Year’s festivities.

Age Requirements

While river cruising has become much more accepting of children in the last decade, most do not welcome children under the age of 4, and the few that do may not have equipment to accommodate little ones, meaning you’ll have to bring your own crib and such. River cruises have expanded their programming to offer more for children; however, this is typically during the summer months, so be sure to bring items to keep kids entertained when you are onboard during a festive sailing.

Classic Rivers for Christmas Markets

The Danube

The Danube is the leader for Christmas markets, linking Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Bavaria. Even short itineraries hit four or five marquee stops. Expect monumental backdrops like St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna and Buda Castle across the river in Budapest, along with baroque town centers and plenty of strudel breaks between stalls.

The Rhine

From Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, the Rhine delivers half-timbered towns and Gothic cathedrals. Cologne’s cathedral market, Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik and Rüdesheim’s candlelit lanes headline the route during the holiday season. You’ll sample both German and French holiday traditions.

The Seine

While it may not have the density of markets found along the Rhine or Danube, the Seine offers illuminated landmarks, boutique-style markets and a festive Parisian atmosphere. Sailings typically start or end in Paris and travel to Rouen and Honfleur, pairing urban lights with medieval charm.

Can’t-Miss Ports

You won’t see every Christmas market on a single cruise, but these cities and towns stand out for their atmosphere, history and experiences. Think of them as the deciding factor when choosing your itinerary.

Basel, Switzerland

At the southern end of many Rhine routes, Basel serves as stylish gateway to the holiday season. Its main markets at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz showcase Swiss chalet stalls brimming with toys, candles and fondue-ready cheese. The towering Christmas tree, designed each year by a Swiss artist, stands before the Basel Minster, where choirs often perform beneath the Gothic arches.

Bratislava, Slovakia

While Bratislava’s Christmas market may be on the small side, it’s one of the most welcoming in Europe. Centered around the Main Square and Hviezdoslavovo Square, it showcases Slovak traditions through wooden toys, embroidered lines and hearty local dishes like lokše (potato pancakes) and mead. It’s also easy to explore with kids — compact, safe and walkable.

Budapest, Hungary

Few cities feel more magical at Christmas than Budapest. Most Danube itineraries start or end here, allowing time to explore two of Europe’s top markets: Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica. Families can also ice skate in City Park, then warm up at the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths before reboarding.

Cologne, Germany

Set beneath the twin Gothic spires of the city’s world-famous cathedral, Cologne’s Cathedral Market shimmers with red canopies and more than 150 chalets selling wooden ornaments, mugs and toys. Six additional markets spread throughout the city, including the Heinzels Winter Fairytale Market in the Old Town, where ice skaters can glide beneath fairy lights.

Nuremberg, Germany

No list of Europe’s Christmas markets is complete without Nuremberg, home to the legendary Christkinglesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous in the world. Dating back to the 1600s, the market fills the city’s Haupmarkt with more than 180 wooden stalls draped in red-and-white cloth and crowned with golden angels. Each year, the market opens with the appearance of the Chriskind, a costumed angel who reads a traditional prologue from the church balcony. A dedicated Children’s Market features a carousel, Ferris wheel and toy workshops.

Paris

While the Danube and Rhine host the most traditional Christmas routes, Paris adds its own sparkle to the season with Christmas stalls set up along the Champs-Élysées. Cruises begin or end here, where the Tuileries Garden Market offers ice skating, Ferris wheel rides and French specialties like crêpes.

Passau, Germany

Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, and its baroque skyline is dominated by the twin spires of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Here, the city’s market unfolds in the square at the cathedral’s steps, where white canopies glow against the pink and gold façade of the Old Town. Be sure to step inside the church for an organ concert as it houses one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

Regensburg, Germany

One of Bavaria’s most atmospheric quarters, Regensburg’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobblestone lanes and medieval towers. During the holidays, the entire Old Town glows with lights, but the crown jewel is the Thurn und Taxis Palace Christmas Market, held within the courtyard of the princely palace. Choirs perform by open fires and the scent of roasted nuts fills the air.

Rüdesheim, Germany

Tucked between the vineyards and riverbanks, Rüdesheim is a cozy German town with a Christmas Market of the Nations, drawing artisans from around the world. The market fills the cobbled lanes of Drosselgasse with a mix of international crafts, music and street food. Visitors can try Swiss raclette, Finnish salmon or local Riesling-spiked glühwein.

Strasbourg, France

Known as the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg hosts one of Europe’s oldest and grandest markets, dating back to 1570. Nearly 300 chalets line the Grand-Île, surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral with twinkling lights and Alsatian specialties like bredele cookies. The main Chriskindelsmärik at Place Broglie buzzes with music and, as the city straddles the border of France and Germany, offers the best of both traditions in one place.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s main Christkindlmarkt fills Rathauplatz with more than 150 stalls stretching across City Hall Park, selling ornaments, pastries and hot drinks, and an ice trail looping in between. Meanwhile, smaller markets like those at Schönbrunn Palace and Spittelberg provide a quieter atmosphere with less crowds that are still just as magical. When visiting, don’t miss a stop in one of the city’s traditional cafes for a slice of Sachertorte.

Best Cruise Lines for Christmas Markets

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways combines holiday cheer with scenic cruising through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site lined with terraced vineyards and pastel abbeys. Guests can pick from multiple tour options in each port like a gentle walking tour, a bike ride along the Danube towpath or hikes to castle ruins. Onboard activities may feature wine tastings featuring local vintners and chef-led baking demonstrations where you’ll learn how to bake Linzer cookies or Vanillekipferl crescents.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld delivers a full dose of holiday spirit with itineraries that visit Germany’s most beloved Christmas towns. Onboard, ships are decorated with garlands, lights and gingerbread houses. Afternoon tea becomes a festive ritual with cocoa and cookies, and families can take part in workshops and decorating sessions. While complete details are still forthcoming, its brand-new vessels are expected to visit Amsterdam, Cologne, Vienna and Budapest. Although Celebrity’s approach traditionally caters to adults, the cruises will appeal to families with teens or older kids.

Europe’s Christmas markets are among the continent’s most festive traditions, and will have your family feeling as if you’ve landed in a Christmas movie filled with sparkle and cheer. Miniature versions of the pyramid are popular handicrafts, but you can also find beautiful gifts such as Dresden’s famous blue and white pottery. Don’t forget to try Pflaumentoffel — good-luck charms made of dried plums that represent the little boys who once cleaned the chimneys.

TIP: Dresden is a bit off the beaten path, but works well as a stopover if you’re traveling between Berlin and Prague.

Bruges, Belgium

Perhaps one of the most atmospheric small cities in Europe, Bruges shines particularly bright over the holidays. Bruges Winter Glow offers families a light trail, Christmas market, and ice rink. The city centre is easily walkable and its compact size makes it manageable for families to explore its entirety in just a day or two. With more time, check out nearby Brussels. Its city centre is transformed into the Plaisirs d’Hiver. But we find the shopping and overall experience in Bruges to be more authentic.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The Christmas market in Tivoli Gardens is truly a feast for the eyes. From the decorated wooden houses in the historic gardens (complete with Santa’s reindeer!) to the Chinese-themed area with a demon roller coaster, this Copenhagen market does not disappoint. There are more than 25 rides for families to enjoy, as well as live music and traditional Danish holiday treats like iced doughnuts with black currant jam. Don’t miss the thrice-nightly light shows and the Lucia procession, with a choir more than 100 people strong.

Munich, Germany

The action at this Bavarian winter wonderland takes place in the city center on Marienplatz in Munich. Families will enjoy the massive tree and traditional shops as well as the “Heavenly Workshop” in the Town Hall, where kids can have fun with holiday arts and crafts and decorate traditional cookies. There’s even a Christmas tram that travels through the old city serving gingerbread and mulled wine. Nativity scene enthusiasts will want to check out the Kripperlmarkt, which features a huge selection of handcrafted manger figurines and accessories.

Prague, Czech Republic

Known as Vanocni trh in Czech, Christmas markets are a key part of enjoying the festive holiday magic in the Czech Republic, and the main ones in Prague can be found at the Old Town Square and nearby Wenceslas Square. Feast on fragrant barbecued sausages (klobása) and mouthwatering hot sugar-coated (trdelník) pastries that are prepared before your eyes. The animal stable (petting zoo) at Old Town Square will win the hearts of little visitors. Make sure to keep an eye out for St. Nick, who roams through town.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow’s Christmas market takes place every year on the city’s huge central square, Rynek Glowny, in the middle of the Old Town historic district. Local artisans like blacksmiths and carvers demonstrate their arts as visitors stroll amid festive stalls of local handicrafts, such as Poland’s popular and colorful hand-painted glass baubles. Kids will delight in the many seasonal sweets, such as colorfully iced, heart-shaped gingerbread cookies, and the chance for a glimpse of St. Nick — or maybe even a picture with him. Parents, meanwhile, can enjoy the local grzaniec (hot mulled wine).

Salzburg, Austria

The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt claims to be one of the oldest Advent markets in the world, and its setting, at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and around the Cathedral of Salzburg, could not be more impressive. Families will enjoy the scores of market stalls, baked apples and cotton candy, and daily choral concerts (what else would you expect from Mozart’s city?) as well as evening open air sing-alongs. Keep your eyes peeled for the enchanting winged “Christkind” angels who roam through the market, but watch out for the “Krampus,” horned devil spirits who follow St. Nick and attempt to swat naughty children with birch switches.

Budapest, Hungary

The Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square is not the only market in Budapest, but it is certainly the oldest and the most spectacular. Highlights include traditional folk art and handicrafts, Hungarian Christmas dishes like roasted goose thigh and sausages and local pastries such as the chimney-shaped kurtos kalacs, eaten while listening to Christmas concerts. On weekends, kids can enjoy a puppet theatre and music and dance performances, as well as arts and crafts workshops (making projects like ornaments, candles and fruit garlands) that are held in an adorable wooden train playhouse.

Start in the Old Town, perhaps with a climb up the 306 steps of St. Peter’s Church for views over the central Marienplatz square and its Gothic town hall. You’ll have fun sampling your way through the stalls at the Viktualienmarkt, a sprawling open-air food market that also has a fantastic biergarten onsite. Put together a picnic as you browse, then sit down to enjoy it with a stein of German lager for the adults and lemonade or apfelsaft (apple juice) for kids.

The English Garden, Munich’s largest green space, offers walking trails, playgrounds, soccer pitches and cycling paths. Don’t miss the famous surfing spot on the Eisbach River, a one-of-a-kind urban adventure that’s a blast to watch. At the Deutsches Museum, comprehensive science and technology exhibits offer hours of hands-on exploration, and a bit farther afield lies BMW Welt and Museum, which takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of this luxury auto brand. Patagonia

Spanning the southern ends of Argentina and Chile, this raw and remote region strips away modern distractions, allowing dads and sons to focus entirely on each other and the awe-inspiring natural world around them. Adventure junkies, take note — the list of high-octane thrills in Patagonia is a mile long, ranging from ice climbing, glacier trekking and whitewater rafting to backcountry skiing and kayaking amid the ocean fjords. Avid hikers can tackle the W Circuit in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park, a challenging 50- to 55-mile trek named for the letter like which it’s shaped. As it zigzags through forests, rivers, plains and mountains, the trail brings you up close with some of Patagonia’s most jawdropping scenery, such as Base of the Towers (sharp peaks reflected in a glacial lake below) and Grey Glacier (part of the enormous Southern Patagonian Ice Field).

Sea turtles, manta rays and reef sharks frequent the waters too, and with luck, you may spot whales and spinner dolphins. Fiji is excellent for game fishing and spearfishing charters, scuba diving — especially at the Great Astrolabe Reef off the island of Kavadu — and surfing. The powerful reef breaks that make this area such a draw are too intense for beginners; you’ll find gentler waves and surf schools scattered around the islands if you’re just starting out.

Ocean adventures get most of the attention, but Fiji’s interior is equally worth exploring, with lush, wildlife-rich rainforests to hike through, rivers to raft or float down, and hidden waterfalls for a refreshing dip. Take a hike up the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, which hold traces of the Lapita people who were the first to settle Fiji. Cultural activities might include joining a traditional kava ceremony (a social ritual involving a mildly relaxing drink made from the kava root); enjoying a lovo dinner, in which meats and vegetables are slow-cooked in an underground oven; and visiting some of the villages to stroll through the colorful markets and engage with the locals — Fijians’ friendliness and hospitality are second to none.

Montana

They don’t call Montana “Big Sky Country” for nothing. As you drive across the state’s vast plains and mountain valleys, that cloud-flecked stretch of blue overhead feels boundless, dwarfing everything beneath it; at night, the stars seem to stretch into infinity. Schedules and screens are easily forgotten in the face of such pure beauty and abundant outdoor adventure, whether that means saddling up at a dude ranch, powder turns on the slopes or a hiking expedition under the watchful gaze of bighorn sheep in Glacier National Park.

Fishing here is legendary, especially fly-fishing, and rivers such as the Blackfoot, Gallatin and Flathead teem with trout and other species. Get a feel for the city’s cultural heart at the Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución, to be precise), a square that sits atop the former ceremonial plaza of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. Today it’s a lively gathering place surrounded by landmarks that include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Art Deco-style Palace of Fine Arts and the Templo Mayor Museum, which displays the ruins of the main temple from the Aztec days. Want an extra dose of history? Head to the National Museum of Anthropology for fascinating exhibits on Mexico’s pre-Hispanic peoples; among its most celebrated treasures is the Stone of the Sun, a 24-ton basalt carving with the sun god Tonatiuh at its center. It’s also worth the side trip north of the city proper to see the awe-inspiring pyramids of Teotihuacán, an ancient city that predates the Aztecs.

Back in town, explore the Museo Frida Kahlo (La Casa Azul), located in the artist’s former cottage, or head to the colorful Xochimilco Canals, where you can board a painted trajinera boat for a leisurely ride amid musicians and vendors selling drinks and snacks (it’s essentially a floating party). The local cuisine is not to be missed — get your fill of street food in vibrant neighborhoods like Coyoacán, or better yet, learn to make traditional dishes like chiles en nogada, fresh corn tortillas and tres leches cake at a cooking class in a private home. No matter what’s on the menu, don’t leave town without sampling the hot churros at El Moro, a Mexico City staple since the 1930s.

Scotland

For a smallish country, Scotland is stuffed with an impressive variety of historic highlights, cultural venues, natural riches and quirky attractions (the Kelpies come to mind). If it’s your first trip there, start in Edinburgh, a grande dame whose moody streets wind through centuries of the past en route to the imposing namesake castle. It pairs well with younger, brasher Glasgow for a dual city break — spend a little time in the capital to see the medieval Old Town and admire the views from Arthur’s Seat, and then take the hourlong train ride for a few days of gallery-hopping, live music and Art Nouveau architecture in Glasgow.

Golf and Scotland go hand in hand, so if you like to bond over bunkers and birdies, you’ll be spoiled for choice. You can’t go wrong with any of the seven courses at St. Andrews Links, but the most iconic is the Old Course; founded more than 600 years ago, it’s among the highest-ranked (and most atmospheric) public courses in the world. Although the celebrated Royal Troon, south of Glasgow on the Firth of Clyde, is a private club, non-members can book tee times on certain days of the week. Harry Potter fans will delight in visiting filming locations like the Glenfinnan Viaduct, where from April to October you can board the Jacobite Steam Train that stands in for the Hogwarts Express. Or delve deeper into the Scottish Highlands via the West Highland Way, one of Europe’s great rambles. The 96-mile trek starts just north of Glasgow and passes beloved landmarks like Glencoe, Loch Lomond and Rannoch Moor. For dads with adult sons, Scotland’s whisky distilleries offer a chance to relax and catch up over exceptional aged single malts — they’re scattered across the country, so you’re sure to find one within striking distance.

Tanzania

The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro … just hearing the names of Tanzania‘s most spectacular destinations kindles the siren song of excitement and romance. Whether you’ve been to Africa already or this is your intro, Tanzania is a fabulous option for a family-friendly safari as the tourism infrastructure is sound, luxury lodges are plentiful and the Big Five (lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and Cape buffalo) roam freely. When you’re not on game drives, you can visit Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites; take a hot air balloon ride over the plains; or learn about local cultural traditions at a tribal village. If your schedule allows, consider pairing your safari with a Kilimanjaro expedition. Father-son road trips are a time-honored tradition, and I can’t think of a better place than the Southwest to hit the highway. Not only does this region capture the allure of the open road with its vast landscapes and endless vistas, but the potential itineraries are legion depending on what lights you up. Arizona alone is packed with possibilities: watching baseball greats at the MLB spring training Cactus League in Phoenix, whitewater rafting down the Grand Canyon, stargazing and epic red rock hikes in Sedona, exploring the badlands of the Painted Desert. In Utah, work your way through the Mighty 5 national parks and the sandstone buttes and spires that tower over the desert in Monument Valley (stoke excitement by downloading one of the many movies filmed there, like Forrest Gump or the John Wayne classic Stagecoach, to watch together).

Dig into Indigenous history and Pueblo culture in Colorado‘s Mesa Verde National Park, where the ancient cliff dwellings offer a window into how the Anasazi managed to thrive amid this less-than-hospitable terrain. Throughout New Mexico, immerse yourselves in the blend of Native American and Spanish heritage — visit Taos Pueblo, browse the art markets in Santa Fe and eat your fill of green chile cheeseburgers and biscochitos, or addictive little anise-flavored cookies. Go sand sledding at White Sands National Park and venture underground at Carlsbad Caverns to see the limestone chambers and watch thousands of bats take flight at dusk (it’s a super-cool spectacle even if one or both of you are skittish about bats). Saint-Tropez in September: The Sweet Spot Between Summer and Fall

I’ve been coming here for nearly two decades, long enough to have danced through its wild summer nights and disco-fueled dawns, watched the last leaves fall from the plane trees and strolled through near-empty streets at Christmas, when Santons in the ancient churches outnumber the yachts in the harbor.

Part sailor’s haven, part artist’s muse, part Provençal village and part A-list darling, each seasonal thread is an essential piece of the Saint-Tropez of today. But it’s in September that these strands of braided history and lifestyle weave together in a way that reveals exactly why this sherbet-hued village earns its mythical status.

Maritime Magic

Saint-Tropez in September is a different kind of dream, the kind you hope never ends. The weather remains warm enough for alfresco lunches and lazy afternoons by the hotel pool, but there’s a whisper of fall in the evening air. With fewer crowds and more room to breathe, the village relaxes into its true self, leaving just a soupçon of summer glamour shimmering in the background.

Though the high season is in retreat, the excitement doesn’t disappear. September in Saint-Tropez is all about sailing and a dip into the village’s maritime legacy. With two fantastic events in town, the atmosphere is both festive and refined. First up is France’s only SailGP event, the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix. It takes place over two days in mid-September, with 12 foiling catamarans racing at breakneck speed mere feet from the harbor wall.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, one of the Med’s most prestigious regattas, blows in at the end of the month, bringing a spectacle of wind, water and sportsmanship to the village as dozens of classic and modern sailing yachts slice through the Gulf of Saint-Tropez’s sapphire waters.

Yes, the rosé still flows, but without as much pretense or as many selfies, especially at places like nautical-themed Le Sube, a haunt for residents, visitors and seafarers to raise a glass at sunset and watch the sun’s long end-of-summer rays cast their golden glow over the port.

For those longing to get on the water, rent a yacht or boat for the day and let a captain take you to some of the area’s best swimming holes and hidden coves, or to Pampelonne if you want one last dose of beach club glam (many close by late September, so check ahead). Rosé & Village Life

Rosé all day is a meme, a mantra and definitely a way of life on the French Riviera, especially during summer. But some might be surprised to learn that just outside Saint-Tropez are undulating hills plump with grapes used to make the area’s favorite pink drink. More than a beloved elixir for the well-heeled and day-drinkers, though, the wines produced in the region are some of the finest in the world.

Harvest season between mid-August and the end of September is prime time to get your grape on. With family-run estates like Château Minuty, Domaine du Bourrian and Domaine Fondugues-Pradugues nearby, one of the best things to do in September is book tastings, cooking classes, vineyard lunches or even a breezy tour through the vines in a vintage Citroën 2CV, if you like your wine with a side of quirky French cars.

Meanwhile, back in the village, the pace slows to a more civilized hum. Boutique and café owners slide back into their regular rhythm of offering friendly bonjours to shoppers. Even the twice-weekly market in the Place des Lices on Tuesdays and Saturdays is more navigable, with no rogue strollers nipping your ankles or elbows to the ribs from Instagrammers battling for the best olive and cheese shot.

Be sure to wander the narrow cobbled streets and pick up a September-in-Saint-Tropez souvenir at Rondini, where artisans have been handcrafting leather sandals since 1927 and will fit them to your feet on the spot. If you’re going to stroll, you might as well do it in shoes as timeless as the town itself.

Around Saint-Tropez, at brasserie tables and barstools, locals begin to reclaim their turf, ordering cinquante et un pastis and dishing town gossip. Grab a coffee or lunch at Le Sporting and watch fierce pétanque rivalries unfurl under the century-old plane trees on Place des Lices. Belly up to the oyster bar at La Fine Équipe Chez Madeleine for stacked platters of seafood and chilled-out vibes on Place aux  Herbes. Or venture out to Chez Camille on the wild edge of Pampelonne Beach for a homemade bouillabaisse that would make Poseidon proud. Wherever you land, enjoy the show. It’s theater; it’s tradition; and no one’s in a hurry.

One of the best things to do in Saint-Tropez is to see its wild side, and I’m not talking about popping magnums at midnight. Because Saint-Tropez’s weather in mid- to late September is just right, one of my favorite things to do is hit the Sentier du Littoral, the coastal trail that snakes along nearly all of France’s seaside edges. This path feels like a secret interlude with nature — barely marked in spots, it hugs the peninsula’s rugged shoreline, dips through pine-scented woods, passes in front of jaw-dropping villas I pretend are mine (just for a moment), and winds around secret beaches and turquoise coves.

Pack plenty of water, slap on sunscreen and lace up shoes sturdier than espadrilles. A good place to start is near the Tour du Portalet. Keep your eyes peeled for subtle dashes of yellow paint on wooden signs marked pietons (pedestrians) or Sentier du Littoral; they’re your breadcrumbs on this coastal adventure. En route, you’ll pass Saint-Tropez’s Marine Cemetery, one of the rare seaside cemeteries in France, where village residents, soldiers and French notables such as the singer Pierre Bachelet, filmmaker Roger Vadim, actress Thérèse Dorny and painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac were laid to rest.

After a few hours, return to the village and reward yourself with lunch or dinner at beloved La Ponche, or sink your toes in the sand with a chilled glass of something local in hand at Les Graniers. Either way, you’ve earned it.

Art & History

Long before Saint-Tropez became the playground of yacht hoppers, it was a sleepy fishing village bathed in the golden Mediterranean light that lured artists to its shores. Chief among them was the sea-loving neo-Impressionist Paul Signac, a Parisian painter who put down roots in Saint-Tropez in 1892 and immortalized the village through his work.

Art lovers can meander through galleries hidden behind old stone walls and pastel shutters, but don’t skip the Musée de l’Annonciade. Housed in a 16th-century chapel right on the port, this gem offers a surprising treasure trove of Post-Impressionist art. Expect masterpieces by Signac, Henri Matisse and others who found their inspiration on the French Riviera.

History buffs, and anyone with a fondness for old cannons and sweeping vistas, should climb to the citadel. This 17th-century stone guardian of the village conceals a museum in its dungeon, which chronicles Saint-Tropez’s rich seafaring past. As a bonus, the views over the terracotta rooftops and sparkling sea from the top will blow your Panama hat off.

For something a little more serene, head just outside the town to the stunning palm-fringed park surrounding the Chateau de la Moutte. This Provençal bastide once belonged to Émile Ollivier, Napoleon III’s last prime minister and a man who, I can only assume, recognized a sweet real estate deal when he saw one. Today, visitors can explore the abode on guided afternoon tours, which include the library, home to over 4,000 volumes that include works by Hugo, Balzac, Voltaire and Rousseau. The castle also opens its doors to the public during the European Heritage Days, held the third weekend of September.

Hotel Byblos has been a magnet for Riviera revelers and sun worshippers since opening its doors in 1967. Located within walking distance of the Place des Lices, the port and the haute couture boutiques of Rue François Sibilli, the Byblos remains a go-to for those who want to stay and play in Saint-Tropez. The famed Les Caves du Roy nightclub onsite adds to the hotel’s enduring allure.

On a wild, pine-covered hill above Gigaro Beach, just outside Saint-Tropez, Lily of the Valley is a modern wellness retreat designed by Philippe Starck. Featuring 44 rooms and suites, each with earthy tones and expansive sea views, Lily boasts two pools, gourmet health-conscious dining and a state-of-the-art spa. The hotel’s private beach club offers sunbeds and Mediterranean lunches just steps from the surf. A complimentary shuttle service to the village can be arranged, and wine tasting is conveniently nearby. Another perk? The hotel is open year-round.

Perched between the village and Pampelonne Beach, Airelles Saint-Tropez, Château de la Messardière is a family-friendly, self-contained property surrounded by 32 acres of pine, cypress and jasmine-scented gardens. After an extensive renovation, the Palace-status property reopened in July 2021 as part of the luxurious Airelles Collection. Highlights include six bars and restaurants, a dedicated kids’ club, a private beach club and 86 rooms and suites in various sizes and configurations ideal for multigenerational stays.

Hotel Lou Calen: Boutique Style Amid Authentic Provençal Village Life

CB: What makes this property stand out for Ciao Bambino! travelers?

Amie: Hotel Lou Calen is a gem, truly. It’s an eco-conscious boutique property with just 36 rooms, but it feels expansive and full of character — a good choice for families and travelers seeking something in the heart of an authentic French village, yet with space to roam (it sits on 7.5 acres), a splash pool for kids and even a tennis court. It’s casual, full of Provençal charm and, at around €350 for an entry-level room with village views, the value is unbeatable.

CB: Can you describe the village of Cotignac for families who may not be familiar with the area or with France?

Amie: Cotignac is one of the cutest villages I’ve seen in the south of France, about an hour and 15 minutes from Aix-en-Provence and two hours from Avignon. It’s set dramatically at the base of a cliff, and some of the oldest homes are built into the rock. It has everything you want your French village vacation to have: cobblestone streets, shady plane trees, adorable cafés and a weekly farmers’ market (Tuesdays). Hotel Lou Calen is a definite yes if you’re traveling to the South of France. It’s no wonder George Clooney and George Lucas both chose to have properties nearby!

CB: Can you share more about how the hotel caters to families?

Amie: The hotel has made thoughtful choices. There are three pools, one of which is designated for adults only, and a splash pool with a sandy bottom, giving it the feel of a small beach. There are a few multi-room configurations available for families, ensuring everyone has their own space. And the grounds are a bit of a natural maze, which is great for kids who love to explore. Lou Calen is low-key and not a “kids’ club” type of property, but for families who value togetherness in a French village, it works beautifully.

CB: How is the dining experience at Hotel Lou Calen?

Amie: The food is fantastic, simple, fresh and prepared with a lot of attention to detail. Their Secret Garden restaurant even boasts a Green Michelin Star, which speaks to their commitment to sustainability. Le Bistrot, meanwhile, leans into French classics and flame-grilled meat in a light and airy space that’s open every day. One night we had dinner for around €55 per person, and the quality blew us away. Everything is elevated enough but doesn’t feel fussy, which is perfectly on brand for laid-back Provence. You’ll feel welcomed and relaxed.

If you’re a fan of local brews, you can’t get more local than the hotel’s microbrewery, La Tuf, set up in a former laundry room (closed Sunday and Monday). There’s also a pastis bar, O’Fadoli, on site, with 80 kinds of pastis and absinthes.

CB: You mentioned the Tuesday market. What will we find there?

Amie: The market on Tuesdays is my new favorite in the region with loads of French goodies like spices, olive oil, wood products, beautiful fabrics and, of course, fresh locally grown and made food.

CB: How does Cotignac fit into a broader Provence itinerary? Could you use Hotel Lou Calen as a home base?

Amie: This part of Provence, the Var department, is still relatively under the radar, which is part of its appeal. The hotel is also well-situated to make it a peaceful home base for exploring other major French cities. So while Cotignac feels blissfully off the beaten path, you’re never too far from a cute café or a local market, and within a couple of hours of more iconic sites and hubs of Provence and the Côte d’Azur.

For first-timers to Provence, I’d recommend staying on-property for two days, exploring Cotignac, enjoying the market, sipping local rosé under the plane trees and dining at the hotel’s excellent restaurants. Then, if you want, move on to the Alpilles or the Luberon Valley, or nearby cities or coastal towns like Sainte-Maxime or Saint-Tropez.

CB: What kinds of travelers should consider Hotel Lou Calen as part of their French holiday?

Amie: Families, couples and friends looking for an immersive experience with a touch of rustic elegance will fall in love with Hotel Lou Calen’s eclectic and stylish vibes. Anyone who wants to show their kids a more authentic side of France, or who appreciates relaxed hospitality in the heart of a Provençal village, will get the most out of it. Think of it as less tourist checklists and more authentic connections.

CB: Any tips for booking?

Amie: As is the case everywhere these days, if you have your heart set on an experience or a place, book early, especially in high season, to avoid disappointment. The town is small and the hotel, with only 36 rooms, fills fast. It’s open year-round, so off-season travel is also a worthwhile consideration.

CB: How does Hotel Lou Calen compare to other resorts in the area?

Amie: Nearby Château de Berne is gorgeous, but it’s much more of a wine resort. It’s also more remote, not in a village setting. At Hotel Lou Calen, you get the best of great food and wine, warm hospitality and a setting that lets you walk out your door and straight into French village life.

One of the reasons I like it so much for families is that the list of things to do in the Dordogne is so varied within a small geographic area. Cultural and historic touring can easily be combined with active days out biking, hiking, swimming and canoeing.

All this to do and the Dordogne is not overrun with tourists? That’s a travel win for sure! Best of all, peak holiday months like July are busy, but not in a “never again” sort of way.

Our Favorite Things to Do in the Dordogne Region of France

Dordogne Markets

Meandering through markets in France is one of life’s great pleasures and a perfect way to get a glimpse of local life in action. There are wonderful markets to explore in the region every day of the week, including Sundays. Here’s a link to a schedule of market days in the Dordogne.

With small kids this is a no-brainer as all the treats and trinkets can easily entertain them. Honestly, the 10-year-old boy in our group wrote in his diary that our market visit was SO boring. So be it — markets aren’t for everyone, no matter how old. The next day was spent at the zipline adventure park, Parc-en-Ciel, and any conviction in his mind that the Dordogne region isn’t fun for kids disappeared instantly.

Prehistoric Caves

The area around the Dordogne is full of prehistoric caves, some with paintings and others with interesting rock formations. While they are relatively close to each other and easy to find, it is important to note that purchasing tickets in advance can be challenging and not all caves take reservations. Lascaux IV

Lascaux is the most famous prehistoric cave. In order to preserve it, an exact replica, Lascaux IV, was built next to it. This tour is a great place to start for first-timers and kids. There are many tours in English, the tour is very educational and because it’s a replica, the animal paintings, mainly horses and bulls, are very easy to see.

Font-de-Gaume

Font-de-Gaume is widely considered to have the best cave art in the area, and is the most difficult ticket to obtain since they only allow 180 visitors per day (12 people per tour). There are only a couple of tours in English. This feels like a cave — it’s cool inside with narrow areas — but it’s an intimate and personalized experience.

The guides are very knowledgeable and the main paintings here are of bison. The tour is 45 to 50 minutes and kids need a good attention span here, as the groups are small and talking is disruptive.

Rouffignac

After seeing the two most famous caves in the area, we went to one of the most popular ones, Rouffignac. This was our kids’ favorite because visitors ride on an electric train to view the famous mammoths. Tours are only in French and same-day tickets can be bought onsite, but are subject to availability.

Castle Visits

There are more than 1,000 castles in the Dordogne. Not all are open for visitors, but there are plenty to explore. We visited Château de Beynac — one of my favorite castles in all of Europe. Château de Castelnaud is also fantastic with a large collection of medieval ammunition on display. If you are traveling with boys, this is a crowd-pleaser.

You don’t need to go into all the castles to appreciate them. The exterior is always a big part of the magic. Personally, I think a boat ride down the Dordogne River is the perfect way to view many of the castles all in one go.

Canoeing or Kayaking on the Dordogne River

There may not be a more magical river to canoe or kayak than the Dordogne River. Every bend reveals a castle or an astonishing medieval city built into the cliffs. There are many canoeing and kayaking companies to choose from and we went with Roquegeoffre, which was recommended by our hotel. The employees were great — efficient and organized, and there is an ice cream store at the end!

Since we were traveling with a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, we chose the shorter “highlights” course, comprised of a minimum of two and half hours of kayaking without stops.  Our total time with the kayaks was just over four hours, including a stop in La Roque-Gageac for lunch. With younger children I would recommend packing a lunch and stopping at one of the little beaches along the way instead of going to a restaurant — four hours is too long for little ones. Another option if you want to see the sights without the kayaking is an hourlong ride on a gabarre boat.

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

Garden visits are fun for every age, particularly versions with mazes and trails for kids to romp around. We spent an afternoon at Les Jardins de Marqueyssac and loved it. Garden touring is effortless and relaxing; this is a perfect destination for all ages.

Bike Riding 

When people tell me they are going to bike Italy’s rural roads with kids I always have an eyebrow up, as the roads are narrow with blind corners — this combination only seems to make the Italians drive faster.

In the Dordogne, however, many of the back roads are very quiet with gentle hills and are glorious for bike riding. We had bikes delivered to our farmhouse for the week and cycled around as a break from sightseeing. Hotels or villa agencies can also organize bike rentals for you

Summer Festivals

Summer festivals are plentiful. We were lucky enough to catch Beaumont du Perigord decked out for their celebration. Some villages have evening cookouts of sorts where the community gets together outside for dinner. We joined one for an evening and within no time, our kids were playing tag with kids from all over the world while we sipped wine.

Where to Stay in the Dordogne

Our favorite part of the Dordogne for families is that it’s so easy to go local and not feel surrounded by tourists all the time. Kids don’t get quite as excited by quaint villages as we do, but if you loiter in a place for long enough, they settle in and discover the fun and freedom of village life in the French countryside.

We rented a villa outside the idyllic village of Tremolat and loved this area as a home-base for exploring the region. It’s a bit off the central tourist corridor, but the main Dordogne attractions are still accessible from here. Villa rentals in the Dordogne are popular, although, I recommend rentals for multiple families traveling together, not independent families. For single families, I prefer hotel stays where other kids are likely to be present. We have loved our stays at Le Chevrefeuille, a farmhouse-style accommodation with a perfect setup for kids. I also scouted Château Les Merles, a stylish boutique hotel with an apartment that works well for families. If you want an upscale hotel with full services, this is one to check out.

Dining in the Dordogne

The Dordogne region is filled with gastronomic gems that cater to sophisticated palates and those looking for the traditional cuisine of the region. From Michelin-star restaurants to those that have been passed down through the generations, you are sure to find something you and your children will love when you visit.

Regardless of your cravings, be sure and visit Les Truffières in Tremolat, a working farm with a restaurant. This is one of our most memorable meals in all of France. We returned back for five nights, we loved it so much! Your kids will enjoy the animals and garden; you will enjoy the food, the host and the price point.
